Yoga?

I'm big on yoga... and I know that it's a great excercise to do while pregnant. But I went to a class two nights ago, and I felt like I needed to hold back on anything that elongated or worked on my core/abdomen, or anything that required me to lay on my stomach (like boat pose).

Am I just being paranoid? I'm only about 6 weeks, so it's likely I am. But I'd definitely appreciate your opinions on yoga stuff :).

  • Let your teacher know before you start class and they should be able to help you modify poses if needed.

  • Like pp mentioned, inform the instructor that you're pg.  Honestly, it is not a big deal at all.  Most everything in yoga is safe during pregnancy, it is just a matter of being comfortable (the bigger you get).  That being said, if you are not comfortable, physically or mentally, I'd skip that pose and just do something simple, like child's pose.  The only problem I had during my first tri was that I got tired really quickly, but I was taking some pretty intense classes.  I'm now doing prenatal yoga and LOVE how much more relaxing it is!  GL!

  • I did yoga throughout my entire pregnancy. I let me instructor know and she would give me modified poses when necessary. You can't be doing any deep twists or go upside down completely. Later on you shouldn't lay flat on your back and you won't be able to lay on your belly. Whenever the class would do boat pose, I would just breathe through cat/cow. I would grab a bolster to put under my chest if I had to lay on my belly, but once I got really big that didn't work. When the class would be doing core work on their backs, I would sit up and do the leg movements if I could. A lot of times I would just rest in childs pose if I couldn't do what they were doing. I felt like doing core work was pointless because my belly was about to pop, but its good to work those muscles now so you can bounce back quicker after you give birth. Listen to your body, if you don't feel comfortable with a pose, don't do it!

  • Hi, I am a yoga teacher certified in prenatal yoga.  In the beginning stages, especially since you were a frequent yogi before you were pregnant, it's all about listening to your body and doing what feels right for you.

I guess my next question would be, why did you feel like you needed to hold back?  Did it feel weird?  Was it mental?

until you are have popped- so second tri (ish) you are allowed to do everything (if your body feels alright), when you get to the second tri then you want to avoid twists, forward folds (if your belly gets in the way), obvy anything on your belly...

But the other poster was right, def talk to you teacher and they will be able to help you through the practice.

Be aware- your body is MUCH more flexible now then it ever will be with the hormone inside us preparing us for all that stretching our body does. So make sure you are not going past your limits of what you could do before the pregnancy.

Also, if you are a hot yogi (for those who don't knwo I don't mean attractive, I mean a heated room) assure it isn't reaching over 100 degrees.

  • I did yoga this morning and felt fine doing all the moves and poses.  I am sure once my stomach is larger it will be ackward and I will need to motify them. For now, its fine doing them properly.

  • Thanks guys! I'm sure it was mostly mental, but I'd rather be safe than sorry and just listen to my body. For all I know, it could've been a gas bubble (lol). But I'll definitely try to work my core a bit more, while I still can :).

  • It's always best to listen to your body. If the poses cause you discomfort, halt it and as what the others have mentioned, let your instructor teach you how to do the modified poses the "preggy" way :)
