Baby Names

A Harper story

Since we hear this name once a day here:

I was walking down the hall at DD's daycare yesterday and passed a room of 3ish year olds. A mom was picking up her DD and the teacher said "Byeeeee Harper...byebey...byeeee Harpy!"

She called her Harpy. Eek.

  • Not a great nm, but I agree with the other poster, I understand how it happened.

  • Honestly, I'm sure that a lot of people don't know what a harpy is, so "Harpy" probably just sounds cute to them.

  • I always think "harpy" when I hear Harper. I don't get the appeal of the name.

    True.

I knew what a harpy was at a young age because my favorite movie in the wide world was The Last Unicorn and the harpy celaneo was a character. So when I hear this name I always think "bird with boobs"

  • To be fair to all names (as it is clear Harper is not a board favorite), there are bad nn for many popular/unpopular/trendy/classic names. Just yesterday people were stating how great Priscilla was. But the nn would be Prissy. Thats pretty awful IMO. I have heard Maggie shortened to Mags, which reminds me of maggots. So its kind of all over. Not limited to Harper by a long shot.
