Just Diagnosed with GD-what should I expect?

So, I got the call this afternoon that I have GD. After crying for a solid 30 minutes, I'm ready to discuss it. What should I expect in terms of doctors appointments and such? Will I have to see a specialist?

I know that I will have to go to a specialist to discuss a diet plan and so forth, but after that, do you continue going to them? Is there anything extra other than checking my blood levels four times a day and a strict diet that I should expect?

I cried when I was diagnosed with GD the first time (with DD).  It isn't fun, but it's manageable.  I've been dealing with it this time since I was 13 weeks along.

I had to go to the endocrinologist (well, I saw a NP at the office) once a month.  I have also had to send them my blood sugars every week.  They have been the ones to monitor my GD and my OB just asks how my numbers are at my regular appointments.

If your numbers are elevated (not just once or twice, but there is a pattern of high numbers), you will likely be put on insulin.  Some doctors allow oral meds, but mine does not.  I give myself 5 shots of insulin a day, and I am supposed to test my blood sugar 6 times a day (before meals and 1 hour after).  I was able to control my GD with diet the first time around, but this time I couldn't.

Good luck to you!  This board is a great resource, so look back over old posts and feel free to ask questions anytime!

I was diagnosed with GD my last preg. The OB ended up putting me on medication when he saw how high my 3 hour test numbers were, but those meds would make my numbers plummet, so he took my off. The meeting with the specialist was very helpful to me and actually the diet is not too hard to follow, just have to watch your carb intake.

I cried too when I was diagnosed with GD. I went to a nutrition class and was given a meter to test my bloodsugar. With excersize (30 min walking everyday) and watching my diet, I didn't have to do anything else.  The worst of it was getting used to eating so much, so often. Best of luck to you.
