Imaginary Friends

I read a post on Parenting that made me think about imaginary friends. Did you have one? What do you think about LO having one? I had one, it was a hippo from a book I had and the only time he came around was when I got in trouble. I would blame him for doing things or say he told me to do something if I got caught in the act. I kind of hope DS doesnt ever have one because while I know its normal, it kind of creeps me out!

Re: Imaginary Friends

  • I had one, and I think I turned out ok. His name was Curtis. He looked like a cartoon character with curly hair (like he was in black and white). I was better than him at everything. I am the youngest of 3, so it must have been a self-esteem thing. lol.

  • I never had any but I wouldn't mind if DS has them.
  • I had an imaginary friend growing up.  We used to play school together.  I'd write her name on the top of the paper for her.  She had a really big family, which is exactly what I wanted to be a part of as a kid.  She stopped coming around when my brother was old enough to play with (we are five years apart).  I told my parents she moved with her family to Florida.

ETA: Her name was Malooey.  I have no idea where I came up with that, but at family parties her name will still come up occasionally and we'll all laugh about it.

  • I never had one. I had too many siblings and cousins around to even be alone, let alone make someone appear. My neice started having an imaginary friend while my brother/her dad got sick from cancer. The friend went away shortly after my brother passed... I'd kinda like to think it wasn't a friend but an angel helping her little 3 year old mind deal with this.

sidenote: I may have to watch Drop Dead Fred soon....

  • I didn't exactly have an imaginary friend, but I loved Anne of Green Gables and kept picturing myself in the story, wishing I could be friends with Anne and Diana. I think it's perfectly normal to have one and shows a creative, sensitive mind. Some people even suggest it's because kids have contact with a spirit world and are actually communicating with ghosts (now that's getting creepy).

  • Yes.  Her name was Tonka.

She was named after my dumptruck.

You don't understand the appeal of Benedict Cumberbatch / think he's fug / don't know who he is? WATCH SHERLOCK.  Until you do, your negative opinion of him will not be taken seriously.

  • I had one. Her name was Lisa and she had red hair. I distinctly remember the day she "left". I was asleep and in my dream she showed up with her other imaginary friend friends and told me she had to go away. I never "saw" her again after that. I know that sounds crazy but it was such a vivid memory for me. And this was long before Drop Dead Fred came out. I think it'd be cute if my DS had an imaginary friend.

  • I didn't have one but I had a twin sister so I had her to blame everything on. Wink

  • My DH is almost 20 months. For the past 2 or 3 months he goes to this one chair and points behind it and say "meow."  We don't have a cat, we've never had a cat, and I have no idea where he got the idea that there might be a cat behind that chair.  I'm not sure WHAT that is about.  Also a little creeped by this fact.
  • I never had an imaginary friend -- and my question to the people who did have one, did you actually SEE your friend?  Or did you know you were just playing by yourself?  The concept confuses me.

Yes, I saw him, although I understood he wasn't real.
