Stripping Membranes questions

Hello all....so I went to my check up yesterday and the baby's measuring a little big, not huge by any means but with our family history we're a little nervous... I was 9lb 3oz 2 weeks early both of my nephews were over 10lbs and over 2 feet long! (They're also 15 and 18 and over 6'5"!!!)... So in order to avoid having to have a c-section my doctor suggested induction. I was on board with it yesterday but I'm feeling a little reluctant, the idea of a pitocin drip and being confined to a bed is not how I anticipated laboring....plus I REALLY would like to try to deliver w/o an epidural (personal reasons)  and I've heard that that would be near impossible with the pitocin contractions....Anyway nothing is scheduled yet but they're looking at Monday if I don't have him before then, I'm already 2-3 and 75% so I'm walking my rear end off and doing everything I can do get him out on my own. My question was has anyone here had their membranes stripped to bring on labor...did it work...and if so how quickly....and did you end up needing pitocin anyway?  I think my reluctance is a sign that I need to wait, I have a doctor's appointment scheduled for Monday so I might postpone the induction until after we see how I'm doing then and I was going to see if my doctor would just strip my membranes at that appointment to get things going that way. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks ladies!

Re: Stripping Membranes questions

  • Membrane stripping worked for me.  I had it done in the morning and he was here but the evening.  If you're ready, it will help bring on labor and if you're not then it won't.  I definitely think it's worth a try considering your 2-3 and 75%.

On another note, what is up with all these doctor's wanting to induce before your due date because of a "big baby".  Women have given birth to big babies for years with no problems...my sister was 10 pounds and my mom had no problem pushing her out.  The actual weight of the baby rarely has anything to do with the mother's ability to delivery vaginally and the weight estimates they give you are just that, ESTIMATES.  My OB doesn't even try to guess the weight because it's just not a good indicator of whether or not you will be able to deliver vaginally.  Sorry about my rant, I just needed to get that off my chest.

  • I would give it a try! I wish I would have been induced with my first pregnancy. I wanted to go all natural and not be induced - I went into labor on my own at 41 weeks and I ended up with a c/s because he was 11lbs 1 oz and I could not get him out. If I had been induced at 39 weeks I probably could of had him vaginally.

  • I had my membranes stripped on Monday and I was already 3/4cm and almost 100% effaced.

No baby for me, but I did lose my MP yesterday though. My OB told me it's a 50/50 shot that it will work.

    I think it's worth a shot.

I don't really understand the "big baby induction" thing either. Unless you have GD, are very past due or another complication, chances are that your body will not produce a baby that you can't vaginally deliver. I know a lot of women who have had 10+lb babies and delivered them with no problem. A lot of OBs now days seem to want to jump right into inductions and c-sections when they're not necessary.

  • I had mine stripped twice.  The first time didn't really do anything but the second time it did help.  I was still given a pitocin dripand they broke my water and I was able to go sans epidural, so it can be done.

  • Thanks ladies! I definitely agree with you, my sister-in-law had both my nephews vaginally with no problems...my mom did have a lot of problems delivering my sister though because she was big and so we were both c-section babies, but she also didn't progress like I have.... Honestly I went in thinking he was going to measure a LOT bigger and we wouldn't really have a choice (guess all that extra is just me Embarrassed lol) but now I think I was feeling a lot of pressure at the time to have him soon because DH's mom is getting here on Saturday and instead of staying for 3 weeks like she had originally promised she's only staying 12 days (not that I wanted her here for 3 weeks but the fact that she's going home because of some person at her church has a son, who she doesn't know, who's getting married and she wants to go really irritates me more than I can tell you....so essentially I'm on a time crunch because she wants to see a stranger get married more than she cares about sticking around to help us.... and my parents can't travel because my dad is sick and dependent on my mom.) UUGGGHHHHh This is just not supposed to be like this! I think I'm just going to do what I said, have them strip my membranes and wait it out...I've been having contractions on my own I just need them to stay consistent... Thanks for your input and letting me vent!

  • I had it done twice with my son .. I was 3cm both times. The first was a few days before my due date and all it did was cause cramps and spotting for a few hours afterwards. The second time I was 5 days overdue. I went into labour the next night at midnight and he was born the following evening .. so about 48hrs afterwards at exactly 7 days overdue. I was scheduled to be induced with pitocin the same day he was born but went into labour on my own after the sweep only 8hrs before.

  • give it a shot. It can create false labor.  It hurt to get them stripped (but not compared to labor pains! and didn't put me into labor!  i figure baby comes when he/she wants to.

  • I had it done the two days before I was suppose to be induced. I believe it definitely helped me progress and that it may have sparked some labor but I was still induced. My OB did say that I would have likely been coming into the hospital within a few days as I seemed to be in Early labor.

  • I had mine stripped with DD.  I had been contracting regularly (4-6 minutes) for 2 days but was stuck at 3cm. I think the stripping helped move things along and I had her the next morning.

  • I don't remember if it was 3 or 4 days but it did work with my first

  • I'm not sure if membrane stripping worked for me, or if I was just ready.

I actually had them stripped twice-- I believe at 38w and also 40w. DD was born at 40w2d.  But again, I kind of think she was just ready.

If you do decide to have them stripped, take my advice: relax.  The first time, I was a little tense and it was extremely uncomfortable.  The second time I made a point to relax and it was much, much better.

  • Don't let the doctor pressure you into inducing because he believes it is a "big baby"!!  Those are just estimates.  There has been many people that got induced or had a c-section for the "big baby" reason only to find out there baby was 6-7lbs.
