Anyone have Verizon Fios?

My Time Warner bill just went up over $20/month.  Verizon is offering what seems like an awsome deal, $79/month with 2 yr contract for phone/internet/cable (currently don't have a home phone but it is cheaper with it) plus it comes with $300 Visa gift card.  I would need to upgrade the channels so DH could get the ONE channel he watches, DIY, but it would give me 85 more channels for $10/month.  Plus I would need boxes, I would probably only get 2 and just hook up something to steam Netfix or something in our basement.  So the total would be around $95/month.  Plus it comes with a wireless router, my current router doesn't get along with Apple devices so that would be a plus.

Any love/hates with Verizon Fios?  I would be on the hook with them for 2 yrs!

Re: Anyone have Verizon Fios?

  • We have FIOS in Lpool - Overall, I like it... Mostly because I like telling Time Warner to shove it, since theyve had the monopoly for so long.

However, after your initial rate period, FIOS gets VERY expensive. But the again, we have a lot of extras - DVR, HBO, HD, Stupid Rugby Channel we have to pay $15 a month for (which is only $4 at TW). We do not have the home phone though..

They will come to your house and have to rewire and stuff since it uses Fiber Optic Cables vs. the standard cables... we have a big box thing in on the wall in our garage.

On Demand with FIOS is pretty awesome, and you can still watch SU games (our first year with FIOS you could not, so we were not pleased about that)

But, if you are thinking about switching - chances are Time Warner might give you a good deal to stay... if they dont though, Ive had no isues with FIOS.

  • is the $79 rate good for the whole 2 years? If not check what it will be after. My parents were going to switch to Fios when it came to their area, and the first year was a promo price, but the 2nd year the rate almost tripled!

  • So jealous that you have it is available to you. I almost choked when I saw our cable bill for this month. I'd love to be able to cut some things out, like the phone and DVR, but it's been a hard time convincing DH. Maybe it will be my Christmas miracle.
  • also- did you call TWC to see why your rate went up? Ours went up back in March because of some bundle promo ending after 2 years. I called and they gave me a new package promo for current customers which brought my bill back down to the original rate. Plus they threw in 6 months of free HBO.
  • We have FIOS and are happy.  We had TW and weren't planning on switching but they wouldn't bring out rate down no matter how hard I tried.  So we switched.  the internet is super fast, and DH has it running all over the place in our house.  Meaning two computers, sometimes his work computer included, and down to his x-box.  We also love all the ondemand stuff.  Last month I got rid of our land line because we weren't using it all, that brought the bill down about $15 per month.  Then they bundled our cell and FIOS together and gave us an additional $10.  Plus, 3 free months of HBO and Cinemax.  So I was happy.
  • My brother had it in Liverpool and loved it.  Then he moved to GA and had to go back to DSL....he said the DSL was painfully slow after being used to the Fios.

I do think that they got screwed because they moved before thier 1 year contract was up and had to pay a big cancellation fee.  They were really ticked off about that.

  • TW raised out bill becuase I had a promotional rate that was good for 12m that was up.  It was the second time I had that promotional rate.  So I called today and got them to lower it back to $95/month one more time.  I used to work for a guy whos wife worked for TW call center and said they would do it up to 3 times per account.  I have actually done it 6 times now, 3 times at our old house, and this is the 3rd time here.  I am still thinking of switching to Fios though.
  • We have had FIOS since April and so far, we love it!!

We have our TV and internet through them.  Both are fast and never have any issues.  We also use Verizon for our cell phones, so it's nice to have it all on one bill.

We switched to them because our TWC bill sky rocketed after our first 2 years.  I'm sure Verizon has the potential to do the same after 2 years... in which case I will switch back to TWC or to someone else.  I have no loyalty... I will go with whoever has a good deal.  Cable companies are not loyal to their long term customers and hike rates like its their job... so why stick with the same company to get screwed when you could jump ship after your contract and get a much better price.  They all provide relatively the same service... I just go with the best deal.

    Just ym two cents.
