3rd Trimester

Waaaaayyyyy TMI question about pushing...

So, I had a c-section with my son.  My husband was a little bit freaked out about seeing me cut open, but when the time came, he saw everything, and he was perfectly fine.  He was telling me what was going on, and I wanted to removed the small curtain at my chin and watch it together:D

Well, if everything goes well with this pregnancy, I will have a VBAC, and it'll be my first time to push.  I know many women poop while pushing, and I can understand that.  BUT I know, this, my husband will freak out!  I know for sure he doesn't know it could happen to anyone.  How do I explain to my husband it's normal?  I guess I'm just uncomfortable to bring it up.

What do you think?  TIA!

Re: Waaaaayyyyy TMI question about pushing...

  • I told my husband that I would rather him stay by my head while I'm pushing and he was all about that. (He doesn't want to know anything about what's going on downstairs while it's happening.)

I would just tell him that it's normal. Because it is normal. From what I've heard, the nurses get it cleaned away so fast that it's almost like it was never there to begin with.

  • If I did, my h did not see it.  they are very, very quick to clean things up.

I would just tell him it makes sense that it might happen given that you are told to push the same as if you are pushing out a poop. Also, if he is worried, just have him stay up by your shoulder, he shouldn't see anything he doesn't want to.

  • If you do he likely wont see it, unless he NEVER takes his eyes off of down there.  They clean it up really, really fast.  I still dont know if I did with either kid, didnt ask, lol.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
  • its not just the poo that may freak him out... pushing something the size of baby out of what he thinks of as a sexy area wont be a pleasant sight either. I told DH about poo, to warn him, and told him stay by my head please to support me.

  • If you are really nervous about it you can ask your doctor if you can give yourself an enema at home in the beginning of labor.  It used to be customary that they would give them to women when they arrived at the hospital and many of our mothers probably did them at home before going in.  My doctor said I was welcome to do so if I felt I needed to.

  • DH watched DD's birth and didn't see anything. Either I didn't do it or they cleaned it up that fast. Which is a total possibility, they do this everyday multiple times a day and I'm sure it's not even a second thought to them.

  • Most guys know this happens even if he's never told you this. Guys talk about these things too, even if it's not as frequently as we do.

  • I first heard about "pooping on the table" from these boards.  :)  I just kind of lightheartedly brought it up with DH and was like, "I hope I don't poop!"  But like pp's have said, the way the bed is broken down, your butt is at the edge of it and there's a giant bag to catch stuff, so it's not like you'd be laying in poop if it happened.  DH says I didn't poop with DD1, but I still am not sure if I believe him or if he was just trying to be nice.  :)  Either way, it's no big deal and it won't even be on your mind when you're pushing.  All you'll be thinking about is getting the baby out.

Also, for some women, when they're in early labor, their body will clean itself out, so when it's time to push, there's nothing in there left to come out but the baby.

  • Poop with the door open for a week starting now and slowly warm him up to the idea :)  It's likely you'll poop if you push unless you give yourself an enema before going in.  It's just a beautiful part of labor you have to deal with.  Like the placenta, and the white goopy stuff all over LO, and the blood, fluid, etc.

haha I wish this had been my case!  Shortly after my epi my BM turned to mush and I delighted everyone with the smell of my BM without even pushing.  DH was brave and did a "cheek check" for me b/c something didn't 'feel' right, even though I was totally numb.  The rest of the time I was paranoid about more BM coming out.  Which it didn't until I started pushing... but it was a lovely experience.

  • I also hear rectal prolapse is common. You're pushing really hard and the baby is pushing everything outward. It happened with both my MIL and my sister. I think I'd rather him see me poop than that.

  • I had a mirror so I could watch as I was pushing, and I saw her wiping mine off but I honestly never thought anything of it or even really knew what it was untill I was watching the video of me pushing after we got home. They really wipe it off ASAP, I doubt anyone in the room saw it or thought anything of it. Ofcourse I still hope I don't this time too but it's not a big deal either way.

I was talking to someone about this last week. She pooped with  her first child and so asked her doctor to help make that not happen with the second. She did the enema, but it was a mistake for her because rather than 'poop' she had all of this runny stuff- a total mess.

She said that looking back the poop is taken away so quick that most people wouldn't even know it happened and that when it happens it's actually a sign that the baby is just about there, so a moment later you have a baby!

  • Just tell him people poop! It happens. I am sure he will be supportive and won't notice or even care.
  • OMG!! I think I am going to give myself an enima before I head to the hospital, it is my worst fear of pooping in front of ANYONE! Gross!

  • haha great post! I'm also worried about the whole pooping scene. Ready this helped a little. It's nice to know that they clean it right away. I don't want my DH to see it either. ewwwww!
  • Buy him the children's book "Everybody Poops" then tell him that he may see you poop while you're pushing your beautiful baby out.

DH watched the whole thing.  In fact, while I was pushing his eyes were "down there" with a huge smile on his face because he saw DD's head slowly come down with each push.  It was a huge support for me seeing his smile.  His favorite "non-baby" part was watching me shoot large blood clots at the nurse.  haha.  He even said while I was pushing "wow that sucker went 2 feet!"

  • Thank you for your replies!  My mom said she peed right after I came out, so I know things happen.  I'll just light-heartedly bring it up to my husband:)

I guess I'll ask him to stand by my side, but I know he's going to want to see when the baby comes out... :D

  • If he can handle watching you get practically gutted I think a little poo won't be a big deal. =p Plus they clean it up so fast he prob wont even notice.

I know I pooed a little and DH didnt care with all the other commotion going on.

  • hilarious post! I did poop while pushing and my husband did see it - we honestly had a good laugh about it afterwards. He did say that the nurses cleaned up immediately and if he hadn't been holding one of my legs he never would have known.  In my mind, if you poop - you're pushing correctly!

  • Honestly, it may gross you out now. But the last thing you will be thinking about when pushing a baby out of your vagina, is if you are pooping or not.

DH told me that all I kept saying was, "GET HER OUT!" not, "Am I pooping?"

  • MH will be holding one of my legs while I push.  The first thing I said to him when we found this out was "I hope I don't poop on you!"He didn't see much humor in it...but at least he knows it could happen!
  • My husband only peaked while she was crowning/coming out, the rest of the time he was by my head.  I think under the circumstances your husband will be understanding.

  • There's going to be so much coming out of that general area that it will likely be difficult to distinguish between poop and other bodily fluids. Many women experience loose BM in early labor, which is the body's way of cleaning out the system to make way for the baby.

  • You might be surprised.

My DH swore he didn't want to see anything going on down there,  but when the time actually came and the doctor announced that he could see hair, DH had to take a look.  He actually watched the majority of the rest.

You're not gonna care. I promise. Everyone will be all up in your junk, and you're not gonna care who sees what.

I asked afterward if I had pooped. DH said he didn't see anything, and the nurse said I didn't....  but that doesn't mean they were necessarily telling me the truth.. haha

  • I made my DH read the chapter in my pregnancy book about labor.  He got really pale and then had a little lie down.
