Running mamas, an apparel question.

Hey, Ladies,

I'm just working my way up from running 3 miles a day to 5 miles a day, and I wondered at what point I need "real" running clothes. Right now, I wear Danskin capri leggings, a Danskin sports bra, and a tank top, along with CoolMax socks and Nike Pegasus shoes.

I know that my friends who "really" run have all sorts of compression tights, etc. At what point would you say I actually need stuff like that? Any recommendations?

Thanks so much!

  • the only thing that pops out for me on your list is the shoes. i very, very strongly recommend that you go get fitted for shoes at a running specialty store. it will greatly decrease your potential of injury. the #1 cause of injury is poorly fitted shoes, probably tied with the stupidity of increasing mileage too quickly (a lot of people are guilty of this, not saying you are though!).

wear what's comfortable to you. if the sports bra supports you, then great. if you don't have issues running in those clothes, then so be it. don't worry about what others have, wear what works for you!

everyone's different. i LOVE my compression tights. i hate running in loose bottoms (my go-to shorts are nike tempo, the nike pacer are 2nd), but can't stand tight tops. and... my compression tights make my cellulite less noticeable :) i rarely run with a shirt on in the summer... if you're out at 5am with me, sorry, you're going to see some belly jiggle. but it's what i'm comfortable in.

Thanks so much. I want to get fitted for shoes. I live sort of in the middle of nowhere, so I think the nearest city that might have a specialty running store like that is 90 miles away. I'll definitely check online. Thanks!

  • I agree with the shoes.  You definitely needs good shoes even if you are only doing 3 miles.  I would ask them the life of the shoes.  I think 300 miles is pretty normal but some do have a longer life.  I also love my Lululemon Run Inspire Crops as well as my Wunder Crops.  They are pricey but totally worth every penny.  I ask for gift cards there.  I also prefer tank tops even in the winter and then I wear sleeves. I like Sugoi Sleeves.  As pp said run in what you are comfortable in. In the summer I love to run in running skirts (I was skeptical but I love them). Try a few things and see what you like.

  • I agree with pps about the shoes, but other than that my philosophy with running clothes is : You know when you'll need it.

I got my "specialty" running apparel as I needed it.  When I started going for runs longer than 5 or 6 miles I felt like the girls needed more support and got a more high strength sports bra.

Next came some specialty running tops/jackets/gloves/caps when I was training for a half marathon in the winter and running in 40 degree weather (I know, poor poor CA girl.  Others run in much colder, but for me, that's when I needed the lightweight extra warm stuff.)

I picked up a pair of Vibrams when I started having issues with my IT band.  I had heard they were very helpful for cutting down on pain and they were - amazing.  Haven't had an issue in over a year.  (Got a pair for my mom who had ankle pain after running and she also swears by them)

My next running apparel purchase is going to be a good pair of running sunglasses since that's my current issue with my runs.

I never used compression pants/tights/sleeves because I've never felt like I needed them.
