Babies on the Brain

Idiot parent alert, courtesy of facebook

A girl I know (SIL of one of my bff's) posts how her 4yr old has a 104.3 fever and she's waiting for her mom to come bring her Motrin. Ummm WTF, maybe I'm a clueless ftm but shouldn't you take a small child to urgent care/the ER for a fever that high? And WHY do you not have fever reducer in the house? Or if I give you the benefit of the doubt and say you did not know you ran out, why would you broadcast this oversight to the entire fb community?

  • I don't know.  Asher had a fever of 104.5 several nights in a row when he had roseola and they kept telling me they didn't need to see him unless it went up to 105.  Which I personally think is crazy.  It made me very nervous

  • They told us to call at 104 if it didn't go down with fever reducer.  But I'm such a nervous ftm, I'd be out the door on the way to the doc by now if I were her.

  • Maybe I'm missing something or am a crappy mom but I don't think this is idiot-worthy really at all.  Depending on her pedi's guidelines for a fever - like ghostmonkey said they probably want to see if it comes down with meds first. ::shrugs::

  • Eh if it didnt go down with meds, and removing blankets/to warm of clothing and a cool rag, then I'd do in. R always gets high fevers. I do as well my normal fever is 104 they go to 105 at times.

It did scare me, I didn't sleep at all.  And I did take him to the ER once and they told me the same thing.  Its roseola, his temp isn't above 105, come back if it goes up.  My H and I were a mess over it.

  • Good to know - although I still think 104 sounds crazy high for a young child. I'd at least be putting on fb that I was putting him/her in a lukewarm bath! One of her Greek relatives suggested a vinegar compress... Is that some other trick I need to know about?

  • I would give Jake a fever reducer and see if that worked before even calling a dr. And we have run out of fever reducer before, it happens.

  • A high fever is scary but children can normally go much higher in temps than adults.  We were told at 104 that if it didn't come down with tylenol or motrin to come in.  The only time we've dealt with a 104 was with Em's bladder infection.

  • J was 103.2 using the ear therm last night, which means he was probably well over 104.  I loaded him up on motrin and put him right in a luke warm bath to bring it down.  We are to call only if it stays over 104 and head to the ER at 105.

  • Add me to the idiot parent list. Allie had a fever that high with strep last year.  :GASP: We ran out of Motrin the last time she was sick.  Ours had expired and I had no idea.  And being a "FTM" is no excuse for 4 year old.

This is the one time I have to say "wait until you have been there."

  • Yeah, there's not much to do for a 104 / 104.5. Tylenol, Motrin, cool clothing, oral liquids, soothing. I think most parents are concerned that their child will seize, or their brain will melt.

FTR, febrile seizures happen because a fever goes from point A to point B too fast, it has NOTHING to do with how high it goes.

And brain damage happens at a much higher temperature. I know it's scary, but this is something that there just isn't much to do about. Frustrating. But remember, that fever is also killing off whatever is making LO sick. (Teething, well, sorry. That just sucks)

  • I agree, it DOES sound like a crazy high temp, but our Ped doesn't get too concerned unless the fever is over 105! My oldest son had a temp of 104.8 last winter and our Ped didn't even bat an eyelash...yet I thought ds needed to be hospitalized.

  • Our pedi said that actual brain damage wouldn't occur unless a fever was at 107 for more than 15 minutes or something like that.  High fevers still scare the crap out of me and I get probably irrationally nervous starting at like 102, but generally there's not much to do besides give a fever reducer and wait.  We do try to make sure all meds are stocked, but we have run out before.  I wouldn't classify this into idiot parents.

  • I actually call "idiot parent" not for the high fever, but on the girl putting it on fb that she was waiting for her mom to bring her some fever reducer.. She should've been getting LO a popsicle, or at least a snuggle... not updating the world...

  • if you call the pedi's office, they'll tell you to try to get it down with meds and other treatments -- tepid bath, fluids etc.

burrito's was up to 106 rectally and he was rather delirious, but it came down immediately with a bath and meds.  and yes, i was nearly catatonic i was so scared.  we called the dr immediately and were told the above.  and were also told digital therms are not that great, to get a real one.

that being said, it's different for infants and small kids. so i don't know about a 4 year old.
