Problems napping in crib

DS has been napping in his swing since he was about 3w old. He does all of his nighttime sleep in his crib, but naps have been in the swing.

This week, I've been working in getting him to nap in his crib. Naps in the crib are only lasting 30-40 minutes. He's swaddled and has the sleep sheep going. I went in after 30 to hold his legs down in case he was jolting himself awake, but he woke up before the jolting began.

I don't know if it's a matter of getting used to it, though I wouldn't think so because it's not a new sleep surface for him. I also can't get him to continue/finish his nap in the crib after he wakes, he is MAD! I try to give him his paci to calm him down but it doesn't work. He's been finishing his nap in his swing. Im not sure if I should end the nap if he refuses to go back down, rock him back to sleep or put him in his swing.

Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions? I'm desperate to get him napping in his crib as napping in his swing (in the living room) is not ideal, especially with the holidays coming up.

Why can't there be a manual for each baby telling us exactly what works??

Re: Problems napping in crib

  • I am interested in this as well. My lo takes all his naps in the swing and night time in his crib. He will go down no problem at night but in the day he is not sleeping as soundly so he needs the swing.

  • In the same boat (as I sit here typing with my LO swinging soundly asleep next to me)...Will only go 30-40 min the crib...has been soundly sleeping for 1.5 hours in her swing at this moment...BUT goes not with no problems at night and spends the entire night in her crib...

  • I'm with you girls. Trying to rock LO to sleep as we speak, in hopes of getting her to nap in her crib. She sleeps great in there at night but still seems to be dependent on movement (swing, carseat, ergo) for naps. Longest nap I've gotten in the crib is 45 min but she'll sleep in the swing for 3 hrs! Im vowing to attempt naps in the crib more regularly, but it sucks because she wakes up mad! I'm hoping that if I keep trying that maybe crib naps will 'click' for her one day soon.
  • DD is 1 month old an we are dealing with the same issues. She would much rather sleep in our arms or the bouncer so I've been only putting her in the crib after she falls asleep. Sometimes I can get a full 2 hours... sometimes she wakes up. My take on it is that the crib is so vast compared to the swing/bouncer/carrier so it takes more getting used to...at least thats what I'm telling myself! Good luck ladies!
