Knowing the sex early WWYD?

Hey ladies,

So my doctors office told me today that when I come in for my 16 week appt on Dec 20th, I can get them to do a u/s to find out the sex but they do charge 50$ because its early.

Normally I would just say no and wait, but heres my dilemma. Two days later we leave for Vancouver to spend Christmas with out family. I really want to be able to tell them something about the pregnancy IN PERSON, not just over skype.

Complicating things, we are measuring about 4 days behind schedule, so we wouldn't be quite at 16 weeks, so theres no guarantee that they would be able to find out the sex either.

DH said to pass, but I just dont know!! What do you think?

Even if they can't tell if its a boy or girl you would still be able to see the baby! That alone should be worth it.

Hey you are only going to be about an hour away from me at christmas!

Audrey is going to be a big sister!

  • Do you want to find out? If so I say go for it, at the very least you can get extra pics. If you have 50 bucks and it's not going to hurt you financially it would make great Christmas 2011 pics:)

  • Personally I'd skip it and just wait and use the $50 to do something nice for you two.

This is my thoughts too. I always prefer to tell people stuff like that in person. If it wasn't going to hurt the checkbook i would good for it.

  • Do it.

Honestly, it's very likely they'll be able to tell at 15 something. It doesn't just show up magically at 16 weeks. Most people get very firm guesses at their NT scans nowadays. A good tech with tell you if she knows 99% or if it's a guess.

    Very good point :)

  • Since my OB doesn't do the a/s until 20 weeks, I plan to pay my $50 at an u/s place to find out gender early.  Clearly, I have no patience;)

  • I would totally do it!  Why not?  I would pay $50 to find out the sex early, no question....but that's just me.
  • Thanks ladies, I really think you're right. I can just imagine the look on my parents faces when we tell them in person! And we'll actually get to hug after sharing exciting news!! Im going to convince DH. I definitely want to do this now. :)

  • If you have the 50$ to do it whether or not you find out the sex I would!! U/S's always seem to make everyone feel better!

  • I would totally do it too!  :)  And I understand wanting to tell your parents in person rather than over the phone. I'm in the same boat.  My parents are going on a business trip out of the country for 4 months. They are leaving on January 15th & I'd LOVE them to be here when I find out what I'm having.  My a/s more than likely won't be until end of January/early Feb, so I'm thinking about paying the money and finding out at the beginning of Jan instead.
  • Pass. You'll get an opportunity to find out a few weeks after you get back. It's still to early and you waste $50.00 because your too excited. I know I'm a party popper.

  • I found out with DD at 16 wks. I held my breath at 20 wks that she was still a girl...haha but it was clearly 3 little lines, not the penis I saw with my son.

    do it. ;)

  • If you have $50 to spend, then sure, I don't see why not.  We spend $50 going out to eat once a week and that is certainly not as memorable as finding out the sex of our baby.  If I wasn't Team Green, I'd give up dinner out for a week.

  • If you can afford to spend the money I would to allow you to be able to tell your family in person (which is worth more than $50 IMO).  If we were finding out I'd probably do the same b/c we're visiting my family over xmas too and telling them then in person then but we're team green!

  • I'm paying $70 to get mine done at 16 weeks :) I'm so impatient and I really want to tell everyone on Christmas, but we wont REALLY start buying things until our 20 week appt... unless they're really sure.. I can't wait!!!

  • I would do. We spetn $85 at a 3d u/s place a week before christmas to find out what DS1 was so we could tell our families at christmas. It was so much fun telling them especially since they didn't know we were doing it. I was only 15wks and it was clear as day DS1 was a boy but my boys liked to show off on u/s.
