vaccinations-just curious.

I apologize for lack of spacing. I'm on my iPad. My FB page has been overwhelmed with the controversial question, "should parents be mandated to vaccinate their children or should they be able to opt out?" Some Peditricians are turning patients away if they don't vaccinate their children and some schools are not allowing children into school if they are not vaccinated. I personally am pro vaccine but I guess I understand the fear people have that don't vaccinate, therefore, I really don't believe we should mandate vaccines. We do NEED more education though. What is your view on vaccinations? Do you think we need mandated vaccinations? Will you vaccinate your children?

  • I ahve to agree that this subject is as touchy as the circumcision subject.  But, since you asked, all three of our boys have been (and will cont.) vaccinations.  They go to Catholic school which require special paperwork be filled out if a child has not recieved all of their shots. It's to protect the other kids who are up to date. Which makes sense. Personally, I don't see a reason (nor is there any proof I've seen) that a parent wouldn't vaccinate their child to protect them.  I think a parent should have a choice/say in their child's health care, but not to the point where it would risk the child's health or children around them.  It's like a nurse they interviewed here said, and I'm paraphrasing, "If the majority of parents start opting out of certain, if not all, vaccines, then the illnesses will return that could've been prevented."

  • Our children only get certain vaccines and we have them on a delayed schedule. With that said, I do not think vaccines should be required. I have a notorized form that i submit to the daycare exempting them from the other vaccines. I do feel that parents should do more research on their end before just doing whatever the AAP and medical community says to do. We have to remember that our country is motivated by $$$ currently.

  • perhaps I'm not here often to know if mandating vaccines is a hot bump topic. Apologies to you.

Oh, yeah. It's a big one. It's a very polar topic and it gets downright ugly every time someone brings it up. It always starts out fairly innocuous, but it doesn't take long before girls are taking off their shoes and earrings and putting their hair up getting ready for a fight.

  • I just got his 2 month shots this morning and plan on having all of them. Their is a reason we dont like mumps and rubella!

  • im not really taking sides, but my lo hasnt gotten her 1month shots yet(shes 6weeks) because unfortunatly i dont have health insurance for her yet! Yes im one of those women that you guys hate because i have to use the government to get insurance for my child. My job forced me to resign so i now have NO JOB ! lucky me right?! Since i dont not have health insurance for her no doctor will give my LO shots. In my mind im thinking it will be bad for her, but i guess not....I didnt know women actually opt out shots for their children?

sorry kind of a vent also.....any opinions or thoughts ? (please dont be mean)

  • I wish to stir up nothing, just share.

My LO had his appointment for his 2M shots this morning....and lo and behold I woke up late! I missed his appointment and have to reschedule for 2 weeks later because of winter time his Pedi is booked. So needless to say he will be delayed in his shots (not by choice). We do plan to do an attenuated schedule in which he won't have to get all 4 shots at once. He will do 2 at a time. This has nothing to do with  autism scares or anything, I just think it's cruel to get stuck 4 times in one day.

I do wish more parents would educate themselves w/o the internet and wikipedia and horror stories about specific vaccines and how they are made and if they are live or not because not all vaccines are created the same and most of them you can't get sick from. (although I guess now a days people are more concerned about autism then getting sick).

But honestly, it's your kid for a reason, you call the shots (no pun intended...lol)

  • I dont think anything should be government mandated, especially vaccines. If your child is 100% vaccinated and mine is not, what is there to be worried about if these vaccines work? I think big pharma has used al of their scare tactics to force parents into making a decision they are not comfortable with. We gave LO the hib, rotovirus and pneumoccal and are delaying the others. This is what we are comfortable with and unlike pp, I think its the parents decision only.

I usually only lurk here and I don't want to argue as I think it's a decision every parent should make without anyone forcing them to do anything, but I think this is such a good point. Your vaccinated baby will not be able to catch anything from my unvaccinated baby if the vaccines are doing their job, so why is this a public health issue? To further protect your children, she will not go to daycare and we are going to homeschool her so there is one less dangerous, disease-ridden baby for you to worry about ;)

    1. Because no vaccine is 100% effective. A small minority of the population is vaccinated, but it didn't "take."

    2. Because there is a percentage of the population that CAN'T be vaccinated, due to allergies, autoimmune disorders, etc.

    3. Because there are babies that are vulnerable to these deadly diseases because they are too young to be vaccinated.

    Exactly.

Dont stress, if my baby develops Hep B or polio I promise I will keep her home away from newborns and those with compromised immune systems.

How do you plan to do that? I'm assuming you'll have to take your baby out in public at some point. People that appear to be perfectly healthy can have compromised immune systems. I used to be one of them -- from 2005 to 2008, I was adrenal insufficient.  Something as minor* as the flu could've killed me.

    * And the flu isn't actually "minor" -- annually, it kills as many people as breast cancer.

As I said, I would keep her home if she were sick. I wouldn't take a baby with the flu or any other contagious disease out in public, not only for your protection but because she would need to rest and recover. And DH and I both work from home so you should be safe from all of us. So sorry I got into this arguement, I knew it was a bad idea, my apologies!
