Random ?: Would you eat raw milk cheese?

There was some raw milk cheese in the OOT gift basket we received at a wedding a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't refrigerated or anything so I put it in the refrigerator when we got home a few days later. Now, after Googling the shelf life of raw milk cheese, I see that it's considered unsafe by many. Would you eat it? I don't want to throw away perfectly good cheese (especially since I was going to make mac and cheese with the gruyere tomorrow) but I also don't want to get sick. Oh, and I'm not PG.

On a similar note, if anyone knows how long raw milk cheese stays good, please let me know. Thanks!

  • I'd eat it but I wouldn't give it to DD without knowing where it came from.  I am wondering if it's ok having been unrefrigerated for a few days, though.

this,  but since you're planning on cooking it the raw milk issue goes away so I would feed it to DD,  assuming it had been refrigerated

  • I don't know why the couple would give us unrefrigerated cheese if it needed to be refrigerated (we were staying in a hotel) so I'm assuming it's okay. I might call the cheesemaker to be sure.
  • I would eat it (since you're not pg), but definitely ask about the refrigeration thing.  There is a creamery here that sells raw milk cheese but it's always refrigerated.  I would worry more about it spoiling or having something harmful since it wasn't refrigerated for a couple of days.

  • I eat raw cheese and my kids eat it too (although they perfer the non-raw cheese, still working on that).  I have no idea on the refridgeration, but I imagine you could call and ask.
  • Before being pregnant, I ate raw milk cheddar all the time.  There is a great cheddar we bought at the farmer's market.  My midwife said it would probably be okay to have it, but we haven't been to the farmer's market.

As for the refrigeration, I have no idea.
