Family Christmas Letter

Are you doing one or just a picture?  I feel that I just sent out a baby announcement and while I want to send out an new picture I am not sure what to write about for a letter. It seems like the year was pregnancy and baby which everyone already knows.

So are you writing a letter and what will you talk about?  Any cute/funny ideas?

Re: Family Christmas Letter

  • We are not doing a letter. I have a pic from when DD was a week old and the I have a pic of her from just a few days ago and a family pic those 3 on a Christmas layout card and that is the card we are mailing out to our friend and family.

  • We have done a letter every year since we got married. I knew I would want to do a letter when we had children so I went ahead and started the tradition. If you sit down and start writing you just may surprise yourself with all that you will have to say! I've already written ours. I talked about preparing for the arrival of our LO, vacations we took, my new job, a little about when LO was born, his baptism, and our trips taking him to visit family in GA and PA. We'll also do a photo card.

  • I don't usually send a letter, just photos of the family. This year I am feeling kind of chubby so I just did one of the baby that I got done at Sears today. It is okay...but she isn't smiling. Boo.
  • Honestly, I think the letter thing is cheesy. No one really wants to read it. I would do a photo card.

I really don't like blanket statements. I'm sure some people feel this way but you definitely can't say no one wants to read it. All of our friends and family are all over the country so the letter is how they know what we've been up to all year. My mom has had people tell her they look forward to our letter so I'm not sure why they would bother to lie about that! I also love getting them b/c again, with everyone far away, it's nice to hear what they've done during the year.

I personally enjoy letters much more than photos. Now, if everyone you send cards to are people you see a lot throughout the year then I probably wouldn't do a letter.

Yup. One year my family did a Christmas letter spoof. Since usually Christmas letters brag people up, we talked about awkward things in ours. Dad fell off the ladder outside. My sister-in-law was knocked up, even though they weren't planning on having kids for a few years. My little brother had to do extra work to make sure he passed his algebra class. I transferred to a different university, giving up the full scholarship I had at the original university I went to...

So much more entertaining than reading about X's trip to Italy, and how her kids are all honor students, and her husband got a promotion, and she lost 90 lbs and ran a marathon, blah blah blah.

  • i got holiday pictures taken and those are on the card. i wanted a family picture but it wasn't in the budget and i photograph terribly, but especially so without the help of a pro, lol! so our card is two recent pics from the current photo shoot. i wanted to have lincoln's photo taken every three months but failed so it winded up being a 4 month shoot, lol.

  • I'm not doing a letter. My parents only received a few letters, usually from long distance friends, before email. My friends and family know what is going on (even friends of the family I only see at 4th of July.... word travels fast!). I sent out picture cards of me and DS. I really like those and tend to save them

I agree. Every year one of my mom's old friends sends her a card with a letter with the most excrutiatingly mundane stuff in it. Not just about her and her husband and their kids, but now their grandkids, her nieces...and their dogs. No, I'm not kidding about the dogs. We wait for it every year and then have a dramatic reading of it where we laugh until we cry.

I feel like anyone who wants the details of your life probably is close enough to already know them, and if they live far away they are probably on FB or something. If there is someone who you want to send an update to, I would write them a personal letter, not just send the same letter to everyone.

I think it is based on your family if they read it...I totally love reading them! I don't see family much and it is fun to see what things they are up to and what milestones they have. I thought about sending out a recipe instead of a letter because I don't really have much to say...kind of a little gift.
