Mirena users come in

I have a 3 yr old and 8 month old twins.  Just got Mirena about 10 days ago and freaking out a bit -- feeling off, angry, depressed. So bloated and crampy.

With all I have on my plate with the kids can't afford this messing with me.

My Gyno said to stick it out a few weeks or months and take vitamin b-12 every day.

i was mostly fine before this mood-wise.

It's a good option for me because of my PCOS.

Please share your Mirena experiene. I want it to work out but my inner voice is saying take it out.

Re: Mirena users come in

  • Lurker. I had Mirena for 4 years. It was great and I loved not having periods, but what ultimately made me have it removed was the mood swings (depression) and low sex drive. There are very little hormones in Mirena, but even that small amount messed with me. This time around, I'll be getting Paragard. There are NO hormones in that and works just because of the copper that is in it. If you're not feeling right, maybe give it a few weeks, but I wouldn't wait for months feeling off - it's not worth it.

  • I had it for about 6 months, but that was before I'd had a baby. (Apparenty after baby your body adjusts to it better).

For me the cramping never really went away, and I had a light period the whole time. I was not a fan!

  • I LOVE my Mirena... but it took probably 12 weeks for me to love it.  At first I got an awful period.  Seriously thought I needed to go to the ER with the gush of blood that bathed my bathroom ... sorry TMI.  It was awful and I was really scared after hemmorhaging after delivery.  I felt like I did starting all birth control for awhile... crampy bloated, etc.  I spotted on and off for a few months, but really after a few months I started loving it.  I'm here almost 3 years later and rarely get a period... maybe once every 6 months and don't spot anymore either.

  • I was really nervous to get mine put in but it seems to be okay.  I have had it in about 6 weeks.  I haven't heard much about it changing peoples moods but maybe it has to do with the different hormones.  I would try it a little longer inless you are feeling really sad then it is not worth it... At least I don't think so.

  • I bled for about 1.5 months after insertion. But I love it now! No problems at all.

  • I too have PCOS, and used a Mirena for 5yrs. My biggest issue was heavier than usual cramping. But periods were generally lighter. I also noticed my icky period symptoms (TMI) were worse, but it was a worthy trade off. Due to a blood clot, BC pills were off limits, and with Paraguard I bled 365d/yr befor having it removed. Mirena was my only real option besides condom/diaphragm. And I needed as close to 100% reliability as I could get.

I know it sucks, but stick it out another month or so. But you can also try Paraguard if this fails.
