s/o SAHM thread - how many of us are lawyers?

I think I counted 3 on that thread alone.

After too many years at BigLaw and then a sweet sabbatical, I've been working on a contract basis for the past year for the same client.  The work ebbs and flows, but my busiest time of year is just about to wrap up, which is awfully convenient with a baby due at the end of the month.

It isn't the most challenging gig, but I expect to be able to put in a few hours a week from home next year and still keep my resume current, which is awfully important to me after the big hole left by the sabbatical.

The demands of law school and firm life completely killed any desire I might have had to procreate in my 20s.  My local bar association did an infertility presentation last spring.  It was at that point that I realized that I wasn't the only one who had delayed procreating for my career and that there were a lot of lawyers out there who were dealing with ttc later in life.

  • I prefer to think of myself as a "recovering" lawyer.  LOL.   I did it for a decade and don't plan to ever go back.

  • Guilty.

I feel like the bump/knot/nest tend to attract a disproportionate number of lawyers; I suspect it has something to do with hours logged in front of a computer plus comfort with expressing oneself in writing.  It was always a nice break from writing briefs all the time . .. LOVE that I don't have to do that any more!

  • I have a small niche practice that enables me to be in court a couple days each week and I love it.
  • HA!  My DH is a lawyer and his grandfather started a large firm here that his father is still of counsel at, (our name is on the firm).  The running joke if you want to call it that is that women at our firm are super smart and driven, move up the ladder very quickly, make partner and then decide to have kids.  Then either don't come back or decide to be a judge in one of the smaller suburbs nearby.  I guess it's not really a joke if it has been the reality.  I think you are spot on that it is very common in the profession.

  • ::raises hand::  Yep, I think my career choice had a lot to do with me having my first kiddo at 37.  In my 20's, I was too busy getting through law school, taking the bar, trying to figure out how to be a lawyer after school to even think about kids.  I had a burning desire to get married once I finished school (at the ripe old age of 28), but the clock didn't start on kids until much later.  Thankfully I didn't marry the jacka$$ I dated all through law school, but that's another story :)

ha!  I have to admit I am jealous of you!  I am hoping to transition to a public service position (read government job) after this kiddo slows down on BF'ing.  With DD that was around 7 months so I have a ways to go.  But I'm ok sticking around for now, I'm at a small firm so its pretty humane as law firms go and the ML policy is great.

  • I am a lawyer too.  Had my first LO at 35 and am pregnant with my second at the young age of 37.  I didn't get married until 31 (to another lawyer).  I still work full-time and continue to after LO #2 comes.  (Of course, after a 5-6 month maternity leave.)
  • i'm an epidemiologist, but i've always harbored a desire to go to law school ... (and recently thought about it again) does that count???

That is exactly how I used to describe myself.  And if I hadn't stumbled into this cushy contract in-house gig when we came back from our travels, I probably wouldn't be practicing anymore either.

  • I'm a lawyer, but with the government, so I'll probably keep on.  I also tell people not to go to law school.  AND I'm also glad I didn't marry the arrogant bum that I dated through law school.  Smile

I disagree! I love being a lawyer - hate litigation mind you - but love my job as an in house counsel.  And with a science background you can do all sorts of fun policy work - it's not all long hours putting post-its on things.  Agree, stay away from that kind of law.

  • i don't necessarily want to practice law, but the study of it has always ticked my fancy.  i think i would be interested in applying a law degree to the public health work i do ... maybe policy development and evaluation.
