vision tests

has anyone had their LO's vision tested?

Warner has been doing this weird thing with his eyes lately where he blinks really hard a couple times and then opens his eyes really wide...almost like you would do if either your eyes were really dry or you were trying to blink out an eyelash.

I haven't seen him squinting to try to see anything, just that weird blinky thing he's doing. but then my mom pointed out to me that when he plays games on the iPad or "reads" a book to himself, he holds it about 2 inches from his face. should I ask his pediatrician about this? or just go to an eye doctor?

Re: vision tests

  • when DD was younger, around 2, maybe less, I took her to an eye dr b/c I thought she might be cross-eyed, she wasn't. I actually want to take her for a vision test b/c I started wearing glasses at 3 and my sister at 2! so we have bad vision genes and it's something I need to keep an eye on:)

  • Yes. DD has worn glasses since she was 14 months. Her eye started crossing and we took her in to a pediatric ophthalmologist since my husband had also been in glasses that young. Turns out she is farsighted. We see Dr. Ellis at NOVA Ophthalmology. https://www.nvoaeyes.com/doctors/fellis.htm

Shoot me at email if you want more info, I'm happy to tell you about our experience.

  • Not by an eye doctor, but DS had a vision test done at his developmental evaluation by Child Find on Monday and she said he was squinting during it.  So, while he passed, we might be watching him for signs of vision trouble.  You could probably bring it up to the pedi and have him (her?) do a quick vision test.  The one DS did just involved covering one eye and identifying pictures of things like cake, a tree, etc.
