Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When are you supposed to stop the bottle?

All these sippy cup posts have me thinking he should be drinking his formula from a sippy cup.  C is only 9 months...I'm clueless!  Please fill me in!

  • I've been wondering the same thing. Also, when to stop the formula and HOW to stop it. I'm not in a rush b/c DS is only 9.5 months old, but I wonder how we are supposed to transition? DS won't even take half the sippy cups we offer him and still doesn't seem to quite "get it".

  • Ditto!  I know they can't get regular cow's milk until 1 year...so I believe it is formula until then.  But C also has NO interest in a sippy cup....although, I don't give it to him consistently.  Once in a blue moon I'll give him some juice w/ water and he only takes a few sips, but doesn't seem to get much out, so I guess he isn't doing it right.  I just don't know!

  • I never put straight breastmilk in a sippy (just water). After she turned one I started mixing a little bm with cow's milk then let her ween herself off the breast. She did it on her own in about a month. Oh I only mixed bm and cow's milk for a few weeks.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, they will eventually get it. : )

  • I started a sippy at 5 months, every once in a while filled with water. At 9 months, I started giving him more table food and his mid afternoon bottle (4 PM) in a sippy. At 10-11 months, I'll start to give his 12 bottle in a sippy and offering lunch beforehand-right now I do bottles first, meal/snack about an hour later. I won't get rid of the first AM bottle until he's a year and plan on keeping the night bottle for a while (it's my only snuggle time now).

Sully really likes the Playtex straw ones, and most of the other moms I know use those as well. The biggest downside is the straw is like 2 cm too short and about an ounce gets wasted. That's why I'm going so slow, because, even though his food intake is increasing, I THINK (not 100%) the majority of his calories should be coming from formula.

  • I introduced a sippy with water around 7 or 8 months.  I started offering formula in a sippy at dinner around 9.5 months. We went full time sippy except a bedtime bottle at 11 months. He was ready and has had no problems switching to the sippy.  I started adding whole milk to his formula this week (he turns one on Saturday).   We are going out of town this weekend and I would like to not have to have formula with us so I'm trying to transition to milk by Friday.

  • DS's pedi suggested we try introducing CM at 10 months old, replace one bottle of formula a day with one CM bottle and slowly cut down formula bottles till its full time CM. he also mentioned that formula fed babies have an easier time transitioning to CM cause its thick like formula. we are going to try it out next week when DS turns 10 months but he also does not take a sippy cup but maybe he will with CM.  he loves drinking out of cups so i read that here are new playtex (?) cups without the spout so i may try that if he wont take a sippy.

Im not sure if this is the norm, but im not going to wean prior to her turning 1. I just dont feel the need to rush it. She doesnt like to drink formula from her sippy and so she just uses it for juice and water and thats fine with me. I enjoy "bottle-time" with her and snuggling her. As PP said, they all get it eventually :)

My guys are right with her. They HATE formula from a sippy. They drink water from it just fine though and regular cups, so I'm not concerned. They were a tad bit early, so they have been about 2 weeks or so behind on a lot of things. So I know they will get it just fine when they are ready.

  • I think it just depends on the LO.  They don't all take to the sippy easily.  Just go with it, I'm sure it will be fine.

  • We started mixing BM with WCM a week or two ago with the blessing of our pedi.  He takes it just fine.  He drinks water from a sippy often, usually with food, but we havent started the bottle switch yet or tried putting milk in it.  At home he nurses and at daycare he takes four 4oz bottles of half WCM and half BM.  I think after 1yr we will start transitioning over to the sippy only.  Right now he is content and so are we.

  • Kids don't have to be off the bottle by one year.  Why not wait until your LO is taking a sippy...if that means 15 or 18 months, who cares?  DD takes her sippy but is by no means drinking a whole cup full at one sitting.  It will come with time.  I guess I just don't see what the rush is all about.
