Feeding frequency? (purees & BLW)

How old is your LO and how many times a day are you feeding them?

Right now we're only doing dinner and I'm wondering if I need to add breakfast or lunch.

Re: Feeding frequency? (purees & BLW)

  • DD is 2 weeks away from 7 months. We typically do two meals a day.

  • BLW - I try to offer at least twice a day and sometimes do 3-4 if we're home.

He doesn't eat much, so I figure frequency is good.

  • Desmond is a little past 5.5 months. I usually do one meal a day. He gets breakfast or if we don't have time--  I'll give him a 3/4pm lunch. It really depends if he feels like sitting and eating. Some days I put him in his HC and he just screams to get out.  He usually eats 1/2 oz of veggies or fruit. Some oatmeal.

  • 7 months tomorrow!  We're doing BLW.  I offer solids 2-3 times a day.  Basically every meal I eat he eats with me unless he's asleep.  He always eats breakfast with me and then lunch if he's not napping and dinner if we eat early enough. The amount he eats varies a lot depending on his mood, what's on offer and how long since his last bottle.
  • We're doing purees (although starting chunkier things - last night LO had homemade spaghetti sauce with bits of beef in it)

We always do breakfast (oatmeal with fruit puree) and dinner (usually a veg and fruit, but now branching out more) and occasionally I'll give him something in the early afternoon if I feel he needs it.  He also gets 4 bottles of 6 oz each.

Since I was under the impression that babies will stop when they were full, I didn't think it was possible they'd over eat. Last night for dinner, (previously frozen into ice cube purees) DS ate one green bean cube, two apple cubes, and 2.5 tablespoons of ground oats, plus the water to thin.  It was a lot! He pounded it and still wanted more.

It's making me think he's ready for more "meals".

  • He's 6.5 months old and we're only up to 2 meals a day (on a good day). Usually breakfast and a midday meal. I feel like we're so disorganized that we may never make it to 3 meals. It's been hard figuring out how to time meals since his naps are generally all over the place and he wants to go to bed so early at night.
  • DS just turned 6 months last week.  We typically do breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Have been for about 6 weeks, at the direction of our pedi.  We make his baby food, unfortuantely he does not like anything green, but loves all squashes, sweet potatoes, pears, apples.  We're going to start yogurt, meats other fruits like bananas, peaches and plums and try blending some green veggies in with other things.  If he's not interested, we don't push it, but he absolutely loves to eat.  Wonder where he gets that from... ;)
  • Oh, and as for amount, we have 2 oz storage containers and he usually eats one fruit and one veggie for most meals.  the veggie gets watered down a little bit because they are really thick.

  • We BLW and dh offers a snack/breakfast around 10 am and then LO sits with us at dinner and eats. I am not that worried about how much he is taking in. He is still only having BM and I feel like eating is more of learning then for nutrition.

  • Mason has 3 meals - Oatmeal for Breakfast, a fruit or veggie puree with more Oatmeal at lunch, and a couple cubes of fruit and/or veggies for dinner. This week we introduced puffs (only a couple at dinner) and juice (3/4 water to 1/4 juice - I don't think he gets any liquid, and the cup ends up on the floor within 2-3 minutes)

Now just because I give him 3 meals does not mean he eats them all. Sometimes, though, he will want seconds! Depends on the day! He's still having all of his bottles, too.

And he's a "whopping" 17 lbs Stick out tongue

I haven't 'seen' you in forever! Man he's a real cutie!

DS hasn't decreased the amount he BF so he's clearly not getting too much people food... I think I will up how many times a day he gets purees and what not. At his 5 month appointment he was only 16lbs 7oz. His weight gain has been gradually slipping.

  • DD is roughly 6.5 months and she is getting fed in the morning and in the evening. I will probably add a lunch time food next month once she gets used to eating solids.
    DD1: May 2011
    DD2: February 2014

  • I just added breakfast last week.  So, 2 meals.

My pedi suggest 3 meals a day by 9 months.

Actually, mine has only spit food out twice, indicating he's full.  He has however, eaten a TON a couple times, and then had a mini throw up.  I need to stop him when I think he's full - cause sometimes I think he misses the cues... or he just loves food, even when he's full.

Yeah, I don't think I buy the fact that they can tell us when they are full. Cece can eat and eat and eat...and then puke it all up a few minutes later. I try to limit her to 1 container. If she seems ticked or still ravenous, then I'll go in for more, but that's been rare.
