Boston Babies

in MA does the baby have to be named before leaving the hospital?

Just curious. We are narrowing the choices down to three for each sex and then deciding, but I am scared it won't be clear even after the baby is born. I know state laws vary: some states allow the name decision to be held off for a week, others require a name before leaving the hospital. I am assuming MA requires the latter, but wondering if anyone knows for sure.

Since you are kind enough to open the post, feel free to give us your input.

Boy: Matteo, Iagan, or Stuart

Girl: Philippa, Eloise, or Phoebe

  • I believe it's actually a requirement of certian insurance companies that the baby needs a name nefore leaving teh hospital (so s/he can be entered into the system).  This is based on what I heard from a co-worker.  Remember- you will love whatever name you choose!

For what it's worth, I love Stuart and can't decide between Eloise and Pheobe since both are so great!

  • Don't know about the law, but as for the names: definitely Eloise for a girl and I am thinking Stuart for a boy. (Although I like Matthew better, but your variant is a little different).
  • yep, you can't leave with a no name baby. name choices are tough, esp. when you're team green! I LOVE Eloise, it was in the running for us up til a final veto by MH.  I'm not loving any of your boy names. If i had to pick i'd go with Matteo but IMO it only works if you're Spanish. good luck!

Probably should have mentioned that the babe will be 1/2 filipino which would make the spanish name 'fit' :)

  • I love Matteo and Pheobe, but have a soft spot for Philippa as that's the same name as my mom's childhood friend so I heard lots of fun stories about her :)

  • Yep, pretty sure you need to have a name before leaving the hospital.  When we had our LO we didn't have a name picked out when she was born (had narrowed it down to 2).  I think we made it to that night without a name and I couldn't sleep until we made a final decision.  Once she was born it made it so much easier to make that final choice.

My thoughts: Boy - I like Matteo the most I think.  Girl - I like all of them but I think I like Phoebe the best.

  • I actually asked this question at our birth center orientation last night.  The midwife said we can take as long as we like to pick a name.  She used the word "weeks."  Which is a heck of a relief b/c we are not even close.

  • I asked about this during my hospital tour since I'm not sure I'll be ready to commit to a name before our baby girl is here.  I was told that you can leave without a name, but you will have to file your paperwork with City Hall (instead of the hospital taking care of the birth certificate, etc.)

As for names, I like Matteo and Phoebe best.  GL!

  • I'm not sure about requirements on naming the baby, but I like Matteo. My 17 month old is Matteo and we don't hear it used often and people always comment on it when they hear it. We're not Spanish, we're Italian- the name Matteo is both, although we've been told Mateo is more common for Spanish and Matteo is more common for Italian- I don't know how true it is.
