Moms of 3ish year olds...

Do u still use a stroller? I probably use mine way more than I should and I'm starting to become conscious of having my 3 year olds in one. I need to use it in the store. My girls wont stay with me and hold my hands (I use a cart sometimes). I also bring it to library storytime and playgrounds, mainly to wrangle them up to leave. One of my girls will throw herself on the floor when she doesnt want to leave somewhere, so it helps to have the stroller to secure her. I dont bring it to  preschool and its tough walking them thru a busy Y parkinglot. Anyway, I'm curious what other multiple moms do? I wish they would just stay with me but I dont trust them not to bolt. Thanks!

  • I haven't used it much since they were 2.5. That's about the time they started to believe me that cars are dangerous (so they're *less* likely to dash away in a parking lot) and hold hands better. So I walk with them holding my hands when we're going in and out of the Y, church, friends' houses ;) (for a long time I had to carry Alex and hold Will's hand) etc. With stores, I'll still use the stroller if they don't have double carts. We also still use it at places like the zoo with a lot of walking. We'd probably be fine w/a single stroller at this point; Alex gets tired far quicker than Will.

  • I use it sometimes when picking up older child from p/s, when longer walks, or just need him contained!!! I think if they are happy in it, go for it :0
  • I haven't used it more than once or twice a month since shortly before they turned 2.  Around that age, neither of them were happy to sit in it for more than a few minutes (unless they're really tired), we started working on the rules for being out of a stroller at that point.  I still bring it to places like the zoo, the mall, when we go on long walks, and to large outdoor events or places like that where there are lots of people/ground to cover.  Other than that, I can go weeks without a stroller even being in the car.

They know that holding hands is not an option in a parking lot/on a busy sidewalk, if they want to walk at the grocery store they have to stay nearby and they have to leave the stuff on the shelves alone, and when I say it's time to leave the park they'd better listen if they want to go back anytime soon.  That's not to say that they follow the rules 100% of the time, but in general they're good about it, and when they're not there are consequences.  And it took several months to get to this point, it wasn't an overnight thing.  ;)

  • have you tried the backpack leashes? that's what i use when we're going somewhere that the boys need to walk - but i don't trust them.  They work well for us.

the Choo Choo wagon is also a nice choice for times when you need a place to put them - but you don't want them to look like babies in a stroller.

my boys are 2.5 and we don't use a stroller that much anymore... they just don't want to be in it that long unless we are walking the whole time (once i stop they want out)... but we'll have one in Disney for sure : )

  • I only use it now if we are going somewhere they would have to walk a lot and might get tired otherwise they have no interest in it, even the 2 year old.  I have a rule that if you are not listening we will leave, no matter what.  I have left a cart full of groceries in the store.  And bribery works wonders too.  A lollipop in the grocery cart works wonders as well.

  • I forgot about those leash things. I tried them when they were younger and they wanted nothing to do with them. Maybe I'll try them again.
  • Mine turned 3 on 11/1 I still use the strollers but I have a son that is a year younger too. Normally I put Preston and Brady in the double and Jordana walks while holding on to the stroller or my hand. Preston is no way would stay by me without running off.

  • Mine rarely use a stroller anymore, but they didn't want to ride in a stroller once they hit 20 months old. I do have them in a stroller when we go to Disney for the day or Busch Gardens or the Zoo. If we are going to Target or Walmart if they start acting up in the store (running off and hiding in the clothes) they get counted (I do 1-2-3 magic) and then if they get to 3, in the cart they go for a timeout.

If we are at the mall or a department store that I don't have a cart, they get counted and if we get to 3, we leave and go home. They hate this and usually shape up pretty quickly. Now last year I used the stroller during Christmas shopping season a lot because I needed to get things done and couldn't just leave the mall or store and come back another time. I plan on using the stroller again this year for Christmas shopping at the mall. They don't like walking into all the stores and are more content to ride in the stroller when I am shopping at the mall or JC Penneys.

If your kids like the stroller and it works better for you then I say use it. Get your money's worth out of that stroller. I have a double umbrella that only holds up to 35 lbs. on each side and they are at about 30 lbs. right now. I am thinking by the time they turn 4 next summer they will not be able to use it anymore and at that time we will go with no stroller. Well I still have my double jogger (holds up to 100lbs. combined) and will keep that for Disney and Busch Gardens.

  • Since my girls turned 3, I only use it if we're going somewhere they would get tired walking like the zoo, taking the dog for a walk, or the state fair.  Beyond that at this age, I think they should be able to listen and hold your hand.  If we're in Target they ride in the cart.  If they want to walk that's fine, but the minute they stop listening they go in the cart.
