DS has recently discovered his penis and it is now his best friend. The moment we start changing his diaper he reaches his hand down to grab on and play. If he's holding something in his hand while we're changing his diaper, like his toothbrush or a toy, he'll use that to play with his penis. The past few days he'll even lift up his shirt and try to stick his hand in his diaper, Al Bundy-style. I'm sure this is normal, but should I be discouraging this or not even acknowledge it? I feel like I've finally gotten him to calm down during diaper changes and now I need to worry about keeping his hands out of the way when he has a crap-filled diaper. Anyone else going through this?

    I just leave it alone.  It's his, he is discovering it, just like toes or belly button. 

    If he gets poop on his hand, you wipe it and move on.  Sometimes i give him something to hold or play with while getting diaper changes if i know it is going to be really poopy.

    Similar thing going on here. Hasn't started using whatever distraction item yet to continue exploring though. I didn't realize that would be the next step but it makes sense.

    I don't want to discourage him and cause him to be ashamed of his body. But I'm not entirely sure what to do either.

    This exactly. If he's constantly walking around the house with his hand stuck in his diaper, I occasionally ask him to take his hand out, but he's just learning about himself. He even knows to call it his "penis" and can name it and point it out when I ask him about all his body parts (elbow, belly button, knees, etc).

    My DH has already informed me that when he is older on cold nights he will probably hold on to it because it is warm.

    I just let him do it. I just try and distract him as much as possible when changing a poopy diaper, so his hands don't get in it. Otherwise, it's natural and he is discovering it like any other part. DS calls it his peanut haha...he even starts talking to people about his peanut all the time now.

    I just ignore it.  I figure it's another phase.  I doubt he will go to Jr. High still sticking his hands down his pants.  Or maybe he will.   :

    Seems normal.  I just make sure when he has a poopy diaper I give him a toy to hold or say "no touch, poop yucky" something like that.

    Yes totally normal. I let him go about his business he is discovering it. And let's be honest it's a man's pride and joy. Lol. I give my LO air out time and he will lift his shirt to touch it yesterday he even squated to get a better look and feel he lost his balance and fell. He repeated this a couple time till I put his diaper back on. Boys.

    I agree with everyone else.  Totally normal and nothing to discourage.  Boys will be playing with the thing for the rest of their lives no matter what you do!  DS loves to go naked, and can take off his diapers with velcro (not the ones with snaps. . .yet), so I just let him go around the house naked a lot, especially now that I'm noticing his signs for when he is about to go potty.  I think letting him go naked a lot has minimized the novelty and newness of his goods.  He still loves them and rubs all kinds of objects against himself, but not as often as before.  I also diaper him standing up usually - I've noticed it's less likely he'll roll around in poop or put his hand down there.

    DS will go through phases of touching or not. And he'll loudly announce that it's his penis. The best was definitely when we were in the grocery store and he pulled the Al Bundy move you mention then said "penis" repeatedly. I just pushed our cart into the next aisle.

    I can relate, my son does this all the time.  When in the bath he will hold onto it for dear life and not let go the entire bathtime.  He also does the Al Bundy move and actually had managed to pull his diaper all the way down to get to it.  Thank goodness we were at home.  I think it's pretty normal for them.

    we talk about his penis and I'll give him a wipe and ask him to help me clean I started doing that after he started grabbing and pulling and he's content on cleaning himself. Oh and DS also sticks his hands down his diaper, its funny to watch since it takes a bit of determination to get through the diaper! lol
