31 weeks and baby is already getting ready

I went to my midwife today for an appointment and she discovered the baby is already head-down and her head is completely inside my pelvis. She seems very surprised by this and said that she thinks the baby will come a little earlier than we thought. Has this happened to anyone? She assured me I would still go to at least mid-january, but doesn't think I will make it to my due date of january 28th. I have really been hoping to go the full 40 weeks and this news makes me think the baby is already getting ready for her arrival. Does anyone know anything about how long it usually takes for labor to occur after the baby descends like this?

    My second baby was head down my entire pregnancy... literally every ultrasound I had (and I had them weekly for the first 16 weeks and every 4 weeks after that) showed her head down.  She was down in my pelvis very early too... but she was born at exactly 39 weeks.  Don't stress too much about it, prepare yourself for an early arrival, but don't be surprised if you make it to 40 weeks... or later.
