Parenting after 35

Big Day

I've been MIA on the boards since DS was born (a few posts here/there). Today we have a big day that seemed like it took forever to get her. We have a surgical consult for our six month old son. Both DH and I HOPE, PRAY they are wrong and surgery isn't our ONLY option. We are both open minded, however we pray. Thankfully we are both strong, but when it comes to your kids you become weak and want only the best.

Background; His ped suggested we consider an appointment with an opthamologist since his eye(s) would cross in at times, then be perfectly straight. They noticed this at two months and we wanted since most babies do this in the beginning. At four months it was slightly obvious and MD suggested we wait until his six month check up.

At five months I went ahead and called for the appointment. I didn't want to wait too long. The opthamologist said he was farsided (slightly) and needs surgery to correct the inward crossing of his eyes. The MD diagnosed him with Strasbismus (esotropia) and said surgery would be the ONLY option on both eyes (glasses weren't an option, nor was patching). SO...as a mother I started researching and researching and (hopefully) found one of the best specialists in my area for this.

Today is our consult. I've been up since 3 worried. I know that if he does require surgery, then it will be okay. I really hope there are other options, I really do. we will get a second option, just for reassurance. The bummer is his insurance plan sucks.  It's a 60/40 and thankfully its an outpatient procedure.

Just a small post, send some kind thoughts/prayers/energy to our little guy and for us.  Thanks ladies!

** If anyone has dealt with this, please send me a PM, or post details here. Thank you so much!

Re: Big Day

  • T&Ps headed your way.

Little guys are pretty resilient and since it's outpatient surgery, I'm sure he'll come through it like a trooper.

Mommy, on the other hand, might need the sedatives!  :)

  • I will be thinking of you and your LO. Hope everything goes  well, either surgery is necessary or not.

I agree! I was a mess the first time L had to have surgery. He will be okay, and you will be too (eventually). I hope the consult goes well and they can give you the best options.

  • OMG good luck! T&P sent your way!!!
  • My brother had crossed eyes and had the surgery at 18 months.  It did not last and he had to have it redone at 19 years.  He said that was the most painful thing he has ever had to endure and would not do it if he knew then what he knows now.  That being said, his was also treatable for years with patches and glasses.  He still has to wear glasses and his eye will "pull" in when he is very tired.
