Sleep training?

This might be a stupid question but what the heck is that?

I am blessed with a pretty easy baby who had a easy transition from her bouncer to crib about a month ago. She has started STTN ( wakes about 5 to eat then back to sleep until around 8) I feel sort of stupid for asking this...

  • Our pediatrician told us today at our 4 month that he wanted us to start sleep training. What that basically means is that we are to put him down AWAKE but drowsy (which we haven't been able to do before), and just let him cry it out so that he learns to soothe himself. 4 months is old enough that they are capable of soothing themselves (we would not have let him CIO before then, and the doctor told us not to), and he said it will take about a week before he goes to sleep just fine on his own. The reason he wants us to do that is because if we constantly have to hold him to get him to sleep, they can develop separation anxiety, and then it can take another 5 months or so before you can start trying to put them to bed awake.
