Multiples

What do I really need two of?

This being my first pregnancy, I have NO baby stuff and people keep telling me I don't need to register for two of this or two of that but they are all singleton parents and not parents of multiples.

What do I really need two of?  Do I need two pack n plays (I plan on using a pack n play for them to sleep in in the beginning- Can they sleep in the same one?)  Do I need two swings?  Two bouncers?

Obviously I need two car seats and a double stroller but some of the other baby gear I would love some insight on.

TIA!

Re: What do I really need two of?

  • A lot of it will depend on your specific babies so I registered for 2 of everything but only put together one until I knew both twins liked it. For us, we NEED 2 swings. We also use 2 pack n plays... one in our room and one downstairs. They both slept together in the PnP for the first 2 weeks until Andrew started spitting up on his back. We have 2 rock n plays. Andrew can't be on his back right after he eats because of the spitting up so he always sleeps in the RnP. Ryan sleeps in the RnP when he's being too fussy on his back. We have two bouncers but still haven't gotten batteries for them (stupid things require D batteries and I keep forgetting to put them on the shopping list) so I can't speak to how essential those are yet. They like being in them and looking at the bright colors but the vibrate feature hasn't been used yet.  We got one play gym thing that they both lay on for now but they won't be able to fit on it together forever (see siggy pic). That's pretty much what we have used so far. We only got one each of the exersaucer and jumperoo... one will go in each at a time.

  • You can start with one PNP, but if you plan on using them later on, either for travel or naps at home, you'll need two eventually.

We started with one bouncer and one swing.  They both hated the bouncer, but loved the swing, so we got another of those.  Two bouncers would have been a mega waste at our house.

Really the only big things that we *needed* two of were carseats, cribs, swings, PNP's (but not until about 3-4 months), high chairs (something else you won't need right away), and... I think that's about it.  We only had one jumperoo and one play mat.  Oh, and we did get two 4-drawer tall dressers, instead of one big long one, so that they will each have their own when we eventually separate them into their own rooms.

  • I started with to Rock N Plays which they slept in for the first 6 weeks at home.  I currently have 1 swing and 1 bouncer.  They love the swing but aren't super crazy over the bouncer so I am going to buy 1 more swing.  I recently got this PNP https://www.amazon.com/Graco-TotBloc-Pack-Carry-Quilt/dp/product-description/B000056C86/ref=dp_proddesc_0?ie=UTF8&n=165796011&s=baby-products which is great because it's bigger than the regular ones so it can accomodate both of them for a while.  There is a twin registry list somewhere out there, hopefully someone can post it.
  • We only have one pnp and are using it for the changing station and clothing storage downstairs. Each baby has a RNP which they sleep in at night in our room and which we love because they don't take up a lot of room and are portable, also each has a bouncy seat and boppy. We have one swing.

  • For us, two swings were vital because a bad nap could be salvaged by the swing. We had 2 bouncy seats and we used them and they were good for being a place to set the baby down if needed but we probably could have lived without them if space were a real issue. They did nap in them to begin with though so they were more useful in the really early days than long-term.

We didn't get PnPs until 5 months old, when we went on vacation. We use one in our guest room now as a backup sleeping space and one in our living room as baby jail. Ours slept in their cribs from day 1.

I think it's better to get 2 of something, only set up one and, if both babies like it, then open the other. If not, return it for something else. Register for it x2 so you can at least get the completion discount if you need to buy another.

Things that we only had one of were a play mat, a jumperoo, and an exersaucer.

  • so far at 7 months in, we only needed 2 of the following items:

    - 2 Pack N Plays (babies did not sleep together) - actually we had one mini-co sleeper and 1 regular Pack N Play.

    - 2 Cribs

    - 2 Bouncy Seats - actually, we have 4 bouncy seats - 2 for upstairs and 2 for main floor of house. For us, we could not live without our bouncy seats.  Those were lifesavers for us.

    - 2 Sophie The Giraffee Teething Rings - they will not share toy as both are teething at same time

    - 2 Car Seats

    - 2 High Chairs

Everything else, including swing, we've been able to use 1 item. Just 1 play mat, 1 jumperoo, 1 exersaucer, 1 Snap & Go Stroller (though we do have a double frame and a single frame), 1 diaper bag.

Saw others mention Rock N Play.  We almost bought 1 for 1 child, but ended up not needing it. However, only 1 of mine would have used it.  Other would have hated it. So we would have only needed 1 of that item.

Other advice is if you register for 2 of the same items, pick 2 different models/brands.  One baby may like 1 type of bouncy seat and the other baby may like different features on another brand.  This applies to everything but the car seats and the teething rings.

You will need lots of bottles, though, and diapers and wipes.

  • Coming back late to say that I also can't live without 2 Boppy pillows.

Use them every day and don't know why I didn't remember to add to my list.

  • I have 3 PNP, but haven't only every used one of them.  They slept in Fisher-Price Rock 'n Folds until they were 6-ish months. (Highly recommend them!)  I even brought them along when we traveled.  Now, I use KidCo PeaPods as travel cribs.

Mine kids loved the bouncy seats, so I had one each.  I had 2 swings and 2 playmats (one upstairs, one down).
