I'm looking for something for Megan to keep her hands busy when we're in the car. I want to try and avoid electronic stuff if possible though because we in general aviod that stuff. Anyone have an ideas?
I'm trying to keep her from pulling her hair and eating it when she's in the car. It's gotten really bad this last week and she's starting to get bald patches on her head. It's really upsetting and the car is so hard because there isn't much I can do. Her OT suggested something to keep her hands busy in the car and it was sort of an a-ha moment! I just can't figure out what that thing might be. I'll start looking around online tonight but I thought I'd see if anyone here had any suggestions. Thanks!
Re: Fidgity things / things for ~4yo hands?
despite it being geared towards younger kids, jack still likes the M&D latch boards.

what about a new book? does she read in the car, or would that make her sick?
snacks (especially something where she would need to hold w/ one hand and eat w/ the other)?
could you work on finger games? snapping, crossing fingers, etc
finger puppets to create stories?
ETA: finger weaving w/ yarn?
The first thing that came to my mind is lacing toys. I know M&D have some, and I'm sure you could find tons if you google them. But I actually made some a couple months ago, and got the templates from this blog post I have pinned on Pinterest.

Basically for the lacing toys I got some colored craft foam sheets, printed out the animal templates from that site, and taped one to each foam sheet. Then I cut the shape (cutting the template paper and the foam sheet). Punched holes around the perimeter with a regular hole punch, and laced them up with shoe laces. Simple!
When 3 Became 4
- a tub of Theraputty. Hide things like marbles, paperclips, very small plastic toys in there and she can pull them out and then she can re-hide them herself. We use this in therapy all the time and kids LOVE it. It doesn't fall apart like play dough and you could just keep the lid on it and keep it in the car. You can get it at various "strengths" depending on her fine motor skills which makes it easier or harder to get the items out.
-Etch-a-sketch
-the little guys face with magnetic granules under a plastic cover and you have a magnetic wand and can give him hair, a mustache, etc. That's a pretty horrible description, I know.....no idea what it's called.
-handheld maze games where you try to put a ball through a maze
Cracker Barrel actually has a ton of little busy toys like this......Great idea by your OT! I love them
