Babies: 6 - 9 Months

I feel like my LO is behind the food "8 ball"

Following Pedi's instructions we did cereal at 4 months and started Purees at 6 months.  I do one new food per every 5 days. He's had 4 fruits so far, and this weekend we are introducing veggies and also "lunch" (right now we do cereal/fruit for breakfast and dinner).

Reading some posts and also being surrounded by friends who have LOs ranging from 6 months to 8 months I feel like I'm "depriving" my LO of food.

Pedi told me between now and his 9 month appointment he can start the meats, sippy cup and foods like "mashed potatoes."

Am I the only one? Should I be giving him more than I am (letting him eat him eat what we eat etc?)

Re: I feel like my LO is behind the food "8 ball"

  • We started purees and cereal right about 5.5 months, and have just recently (around 7 - 7.5 months maybe?) started offering her other things. I felt behind too at times, but I am trying not to force DD since she is going at her own pace. I offer her things like cheerios and puffs to practice with, but she rarely swallows (same with foods I give her from my plate liked mashed potatoes, or toast with banana puree) - she puts them in her mouth and then spits them out.

I figure if I keep offering, she will eventually like them. But, that being said, at almost 8 months old, still pretty much still only likes purees and the occasional chunky mashed foods.

  • we started cereal at 4 months purees a few weeks later.  DD is almost 8 months and is pretty much on all table foods except for like yogurt and applesauce with cereal.  My older dd was the same way, off all purees by 8 months.

  • There is not one right answer to your question. The AAP doesn't even suggest starting solids until 6 months, so in that regard you're "ahead of the food 8 ball". We took our time, and at almost 8 months, we're just starting to introduce her to meats. We'll start the sippy cup soon, too.

Nah. It sounds like you are doing great!

We started a sippy cup a few weeks ago and mostly he just chews on the spout. He does manage to get about an ounce of water when he has it, but its mostly just tossed around and chewed on.

We have tried several fruits and veggies (following the 4 day rule) and he found a couple that he liked and quite a few he didn't. I stuck to the ones he liked for a couple of weeks and have gradually been adding new fruits/veggies recently which he has been much more receptive to.

I think we just need to follow their cues and if they aren't into something today, try again in a couple of weeks. Most of it is trial and error at this point any way.

This. DS is almost 8 months and we are still trying new fruits and veggies.

  • He's only 6.5 months. I wouldn't be in any huge hurry!

  • If you are behind the 8 ball then I really am!  My LO is 7 months and is still mostly just on formula.  He really has little interest in purees.  I keep trying though.

  • Hannah is 6 months and has only had bananas and sweet potatoes. We may try squash tomorrow. Cereal did not go well for us. I don't think you are behind at all!

  • You're way ahead of us. We didn't give him anything until 6.5 months (two weeks ago) and it's only been fruit/vegetable purees so far. And only once a day.
