I have 6 mos id twin girls. They were born at 33 wks due to suspected IUGR that wasn't ever really confirmed. They were born at 3 2 0z and 3 11oz and now weigh a little over 11 lbs. I just need to know what they should be doing sleep/eating wise. They eat 4 oz at a time 6x a day with a veg 2x a day. They get like 1 oz of veg mixed with cereal total for the day. They take a morning nap(short) a early afternoon (long) a late afternoon (short) and are in bed by 7. We feed them a bottle at 10 pm when they are sleeping so they can fit in the 6th feed. They sttn. How much solids are they supposed to have? They are small and sometimes it makes me wonder if I am not taking care of them well enough. My ped is no help, says they are small in a disapproving tone but offers no suggestions. They are active rolling and playing with toys so I don't think that they are behind in their milestones. I don't have any other children to compare them to and all my friends kids were born at like lbs. I just want to know that I am taking good care of them.
Re: Xp (preemie) Help just in an unsure place...
If you are formula feeding, at this point, all you can do is offer them more formula and food - you can't make them eat more than they want to. For the first year, they will get their main nutrition from formula/breast milk, not from the solid foods. If you offer them 6 oz, will they drink more? I try to always offer mine about an ounce more than I think they will drink so I'm keeping up with growth spurts.
For solids, you offer them as much as they will keep willingly opening their mouths for. But if you see them starting to drink less formula because they are too full from the solids, then cut back on the solids for awhile. Fruit is fine now too - the "vegetables before fruit" tip was developed back when there was a lot of added sugar in the fruit baby foods, and that shouldn't be the case with what you buy or make nowadays.
Your kids sound like their eating and sleeping is great - better than mine at 6 months, and they were born at 37 weeks. If you'd like any tips or structure for eating, I loved the book "Child of Mine".
At 9.5 (7.5 adjusted) months my girls weigh 14.15 and 15.15 lbs. They eat 18-20oz of formula a day and 10oz of solids in 3 meals.
At that age they were eating 20oz of formula and 4oz of solids and weighted about 13#.
We just had our 6 month well visit & both my boys were 16 lbs. 12.5 oz. & 16 lbs. 6 oz. They were born at 36 weeks weighing 5.4 & 4.4 lbs. They currently eat four 6 oz. bottles of formula a day with a feeding of cereal & fruit in between. They are also rolling both ways, jabbering away, reaching & grabbing, and STTN.
It sounds like you're doing everything right, but I would try to increase their ounces so their getting a bit more. Just don't force them to take it. More times them not, they will drink it up!!
