S/O when your doctor criticizes your weight gain...

Tell them to shove it up their a**.  Seriously.  Especially for the bumpie who gained 12lbs.  There is NO REASON your doctor should be making you feel bad.  It is NOT 1950 where you are not allowed to gain weight.  You are growing a human for God's sake.

Be kind to yourself.  I gained 60lbs with my last pregnancy and lost 52lbs of it without even trying within 8 months.  Honestly, the guidelines of 30-35lbs are pretty good, and if you're halfway done and only gained 12...you're doing GREAT!

Even to the bumpie who is at 22lbs...that could maybe put you just over 40lbs (maybe...everybody is so different!) at delivery...which is still great!!

My doctor never even batted an eye when I gained so much with my last pregnancy and it really bothers me that doctors are giving women a hard time.  Enjoy your pregnancy and if you go back to your normal eating and exercise after baby is here it will come off.  But do NOT diet or restrict your calories while you are pregnant...it just isn't worth it (IMO).

We are crafty....we make people :)

Re: S/O when your doctor criticizes your weight gain...

  • Good post!

My doctor is known to be picky about weight, but I switched over to her when I was about 12 weeks...and I had already gained like 7 pounds. And she's using my starting weight as what it was the day I went into her office. So she thinks I've only gained 7... I'm pretty psyched I won't have to deal with the nagging.

  • I've gained 12-15 pounds so far....I keep asking my dr if that's ok and she said she's not worried about it and that if it gets to where she is worried about it she'll send me to a nutritionist!  So i'm just going with the flow!

  • I don't know, most doctors are trying to provide you with information so you make healthy choices. Is gaining 12 pounds at 20 weeks a huge deal? No, but as a doctor, he or she has a responsibility to advise you about healthy weight gain. Many people gain more than the recommended amount and go on to have healthy babies and healthy pregnancies, but the facts are that the more weight you gain, the higher likelihood that you could have further complications. For me, pregnancy isn't a license to eat unhealthy and stop physical activity. I think its somewhat irresponsible to act like you shouldn't worry about your weight at all when you are pregnant. To each, their own and all that jazz.

  • My practice has several doctors and I have seen a handful of them so far and nobody has mentioned my weight gain at all.  I'm at +22 lbs as of my last appt yesterday and not a word.  I'm making sure I'm eating right and that's the best I can do.  I figure I'll worry about the weight loss after the LO gets here.

BTW, I actually slapped DH's hand last night when he tried to take a cookie off my plate.

  • My doctor told me I have gained too much weight. It hurts my feelings but I understand why he is telling me.

  • I totally needed this today.  Just had an appointment this morning and got an earful about gaining 5 pounds in a month.  I'm up 12 pounds total at 19 weeks.  I don't feel like I'm on track to gain anything outrageous.  He asked what I had had for my last few meals and was happy about everything I said.
And then he mentioned how normally for my height I should weigh 110.  I cried in the car on the way home because I definitely didn't start at 110.  Being short sucks :(

Yes  Also, you are not supposed to be at the halfway point of your weight gain halfway through the pregnancy as you gain more in the third tri than in the first tri.  12 pounds is nothing to stress about (unless you start off obese), but she could just be pointing out that she might want to keep an eye on it.

  • I see a perinatal because I am "high Risk: due to my weight (and I'm not ginormous!!)  and I have to go through nutritional counseling once a month.. and honestly I basically blow smoke the whole time.. "Yes I walk every night... Yes I only eat veggies and fruit.. lean meats" blah blah blah.. then I leave there and go get nachos ;)  Not to that extent.. but I know how to eat healthily and for the most part I do.. but its irritating to me Im being given food lists of do's and dont's when I've been doing soo well with my weight so far.. I think this is another reason why I am OVER the weight posts.. know what I mean?

Yup, I agree completely.  It's not something to beat yourself up over, but it's something to be mindful of.  You should be aware of your habits, etc.

Yes there had to be someone out there who found something negative to say about my post.  Don't know what I am surprised.  Let me add....

If you are doing the best you can and taking care of yourself....don't stress.

I NEVER said it is a free pass to eat whatever you want a be unhealthy. Do not put words in my mouth (or post rather) that is just rude.

My last pregnancy I ran regularly all the way up to 36 weeks when I started to bleed and the doctor said "no more running".  I still gained 60lbs.

If someone is stuffing their face and sitting on their butt I doubt they will post on the bump "OH MY GOSH!!! I gained 30lbs by week 20 and I don't understand why!!!"

However, most of these posts have been from women stating they are doing their best, they are exercising, they are still gaining and their doctor is giving them an earful.

    I agree.
  • Thank you so much! I am up 17 lbs and was feeling very bad about it.  I was so nervous to go to the doctor's because I didn't want them to yell at me.  I swear I'm not overeating, and I'm not eating poorly.  I am hoping to stay around 35 lbs, but if I don't oh well, I'm not going to kill myself to stay under that.  I'm nervous about the weight gain, but your post just made me feel better. Thanks again!

Oh and I'm already swelling, yup swelling.  All I drink is water and I already watch my sodium intake.  My doctor thankfully acknowledged that some people just hold more water as well as gain weight differently.  I know that I have a sensitive body and will continue to watch, but not go nuts about my weight gain.  I am a runner and have always been athletic, so if I gain more like 40 lbs I know I can get it off.

  • I agree! With DD1 I gained about 80lbs and I lost 60 of those within 6 months.  I never fully went back to my pre-preg weight but I'm glad i didn't, I was, IMO, WAY too petite to begin with.
