Forgive me if this was already posted...I'm incapable of searching on this board!
My parents are looking for some ideas of what to get Will for Christmas. We're getting him a Strider bike, helmet, and a few other smaller things. They'll probably spend $200-$300 on him and usually do one big gift [$150ish] and then smaller gifts as well.
So far, we have a new train set on his list and that's it. I'm having a hard time thinking of anything that will be played with like he does his trains...any ideas?
Re: 2-3 year old gift ideas?
We're having my parents get L a little table and chairs from Ikea. We're getting him the M&D Art Easel and some accessories to go with it.
Other ideas: art supplies, puzzles, books, duplo building blocks, tinker toys, little people setsDoes he have cars? Like Matchbox cars with a ramp? Layna loves this one but they have a lot to choose from.
My DS has moved on from trains to anything with wheels. He still likes trains but he loves all cars, trucks, anything he can "drive" or "race". Luckily he just needs wheels and isn't picky so I can pick out the stuff I like!
I picked up a couple of these really cute Hape cars at Learning Express on sale for under $4.99.
I really want to get him an Automoblox car (they come apart which is cool).
I'd like to get him a forklift or trash truck from Bruder. Super good quality. I'm waiting to see if he will ask Santa for one of these or for Mack from Cars2 and then see which one to buy.
How about Playmobil stuff or I saw cute Busytown figures and playsets at Nordstrom the other day for a good price. Mine has been doing a lot of imaginiative play lately with his single fireman figure so I was thinking of trying to find some sort of playset that isn't too doll-house-y.
I also ordered a set of standard wooden blocks from Cost co.com. I had been looking at a M&D set on Amz but this turned out to be a better deal $39.99 (64 piece). I'm hoping he can use these to make houses and stuff for his cars and trucks to drive to.
Santa and both my sets of parents are going in together of a wooden playscape thing. We're getting this one:

because it was $299 last week. They do have another smaller one that's $299 still, or you might see if your DH's parents will go in on it with you guys?
We're also getting Kate candyland. Personally, I think Kate needs a speedlight, but I'm having a hard time convincing DH.
I saw a plasma type car on o v erstock .com yesterday for less than $40.
PPs have given some great ideas, I was going to suggest puzzles, board games (DS got Candyland and Chutes and Ladders for his 3rd bday and that's a perfect age for them... I know W is a little younger than that so not sure he would get it yet).
Also, my DS has loved anything tool-related for at least a year now. He has this toolbench, which we all love (this was not recalled, and the screws are large enough to not be a choking hazard). I love the foam pieces that we can make different things with. He also has a smaller toolkit he got for his 2nd birthday and still plays with constantly. Plus we have a racecar, helicoptor and submarine that he can take apart and re-assemble with the included screws and screwdriver, but they were hand-me-downs from my SIL and I can't remember the brand of them. I'm trying to find a link to something similar. DS cannot get enough of them. He LOVES assembling things with screwdrivers!
As for him this year, we're giving him the Leapster Explorer + accessories, some puzzles, Veggie Tales DVDs, books and a giant set of Lincoln Logs, plus a few other little things I can't remember.

M&R are both into blocks and building. We love lego duplo bricks and the big green boards to build on. The zoo set is fun because it has animals. We also have some fun haba fantasy blocks that both kids still play with. Ryan got these stacker pegs for his bday and both kids LOVE them and DH and I enjoy playing with them too.

I saw this race car track at a local toy store and it looked fun. You can build your own track and hang it over sofa/coffee tables/chairs... I think you can use any car with it.

Those sound really neat! I'd love the links if you find it!
DS has a truck like this -- it's one of his favorite things to play with. He has this one.
The Blog
I've seen toys like this crane and a lot of other tool toys at Tues Morn. I've thought about getting some for DS but he is just so into cars and trucks right now. He does play builder once and a while but not as much as with his cars.
Those aren't quite the same as we have but there the closest out of anything I've found. Ours belonged to my nephew, who is 8 years older than DS so it's likely they don't make our exact ones anymore. But this link is great, and I recommend these kinds of toys for any 2.5 - 3 year old boy who loves tools and assembling things!

Thanks! I searched and couldn't find it, but I'll keep looking!
Do you mean a View-Master? Terra Toys may have one, if not there are some online at TRU https://www.toysrus.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=view-master&origkw=view-master&f=Taxonomy/TRUS/2254197&sr=1
Thanks Sherry, I just called TRU and they have some in stock so I'll head over there this week.
