Hi all, I'm an inspiring Bumpie just trying to get info about the Empire Plan in regards to fertility treatments. This question is *way* premature but I want to satisfy my curiosity now that I've missed the open enrollment plan for switching insurance for next year.
I know from The Empire Plan's web site that you need to call and get preapproval for any infertility treatment, but does this apply to things like Clomid monitoring? I'm waiting to see my OB again but I've had sort of a mixed experience with them so far.
If you had Empire Plan and received fertility treatments, can you tell me your experience.
Thanks a lot!
Re: Empire Plan and TTTC?
Are you referring to the BS/BC Empire Plan that state works have? If so, that is what we had when TTC.
For us it covered everything but the sperm (we're gay so we were lacking that part). I had zero co-pays. The only thing I paid for was the meds. $5 for clomid, $10 for a trigger shot and about $30 for a month of prometrium.
So yes, if it's the same plan it is amazing! FWIW, when we originally met with the fertility clinic we were told that should we chose IVF with my wife's eggs it would only be $1000 transfer fee which makes me think that while we were successful with IUIs, if we had to do IVF the majority or all of it would have been covered.
I believe it is a $50,000 limit but that was a few years ago.
HTHs.
Yes I'm a state employee as well.
That's good to know about the coverage. I am still curious as to when I would qualify for any possible treatment - i.e. do I have to wait a year? I guess you didn't have to go through any waiting period because you were using DS? Anyway, thanks!

Don't quote me but I think it was six cycles of trying at home first. Or at least technically. But the great thing about the fertility clinic is that they knew how to code things to get the best coverage possible.
If you do have to go the RE route I highly recommend CNY Fertility. We went to both their Syracuse and Latham offices and I can't speak highly enough about them.
Best of luck!
Good to know. Thanks a lot!

I used the Empire Plan and was told by CNY (yes, I also used them) that the Empire Plan was basically the "gold standard" of infertility coverage. I switched to them (husband is a state employee) because my previous insurance covered IUI but not IVF. I was able to use it right away (well, after the pre-approval...).
FWIW, I had some mixed experiences with CNY, but I can't argue with the results! Good luck.
Thanks for the info. I would be curious to hear about your experiences if I get to that point. Congrats on your twins!
