Just found out - excited and scared. & no insurance! help please

Hi everyone I'm very very excited to be here and to finally be able to say I'm pregnant!! I actually tried to get pregnant several years ago, thankfully I didn't as I was with the wrong man. After making some major changes in my life, I moved away on my own to go back to school and it was there that I met my current husband. We got married last May and moved from California to Chicago in June and I went off my birth control in August as we just wanted to let nature take its course :) I actually thought it would take me a long time to get pregnant as I've been on birth control since I was 16 and I just turned 34.  So I  beyond thrilled that it happened so fast! I think the first sign was my breasts have been feeling very tender the last few days and that is odd for me. Then I looked back on the calendar and I missed my period by just over a week so I took a first response test yesterday morning and a second line appeared although it wasn't bright, it was kind of faint but I could definitely see it. I was excited but I didn't want to get my hopes up and be disappointed. We went and bought a digital test and I took it this morning and right away it came up saying "pregnant". What a surreal moment that was. I was so excited, but then this overwhelming sense of fear came over me. I want to eat as healthy as I can for this baby, and exercise but I don't want to overdo it. I have a lot of reading to do. My biggest worry though is health insurance. I'm from Canada so I'm not a US resident and no insurance companies will take me because I'm not a resident. I currently have health insurance through my old college but that runs out at the end of December. I'm not sure what to do as we cannot afford to pay all the medical bills ourselves. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also I'd love to meet some other new moms, or moms to be in the Chicago suburbs area, we're moving to Ingleside in 3 weeks :)

  • First of all congratulations! This is such an exciting time! Secondly, I understand how frustrating the insurance thing can be. I had to wait until I was 18 weeks pregnant before seeing a doctor because I wasn't able to get insurance. Thankfully we were able to work something out with my husband's insurance. It can be really hard to be excited when you don't know how you are going to take care of the medical bills so I hope you are able to figure something out soon :) Let me know if you ever need anyone to talk to, I actually live in Ingleside! Congrats again!

Thanks so much! Oh that's so cool that you live in Ingleside too! Can you recommend any places to go in that area? for anything? haha, I only know the street where we are moving right now and so far have only been there once. I live in Schaumberg right now. It would be great to get to know you! :)

  • It depends on what you are looking to do. It's pretty quiet in the area. I actually just moved here from Schaumburg in May so I'm still learning the area.

  • Congratulations on your pregnancy! It sounds like you are in a great and happy place in your life right now for a baby! Don't stress too much over the insurance- everything will work out! When I got pregnant with my first, I didnt have health insurance either. Hopefully someone will have better advice than me. I know that if all else fails, most doctors/hospitals will give discounts to uninsured patients or work out a payment plan that is fair. I just wanted to say hi and congrats!

  • Well if you are living here, you are a resident.  However you are not yet a citizen. If you and your husband plan to live here then you can apply for US citizenship, which you are entitled to as the wife of a citizen. Furthermore, getting pregnant is considered a 'life changing event' if your husband has insurance, or has previously been eligible through his employer he may be able to change his policy to include you or get a new policy (with you on it) altogether. He needs to speak with personnel/HR at his workplace. Because you are pregnant (and your child is a citizen/will be) you may be able to get these processes expedited. Can't afford insurance through his work, or none is offered? There is public aid. This should be a last resort, after other options are exhausted BUT if this is what you need to be able to afford taking care of your child don't let anyone put you down for it! If you meet certain criteria, you can receive assistance for your medical and dietary needs in the form of state funded insurance ('medical card'), WIC (vouchers for specific healthy foods), or food stamps (Link Card in IL).

Congrats! Hope this info Helps :)

  • You can gets the Moms and Babies insurance through the state without being a citizen, or even a legal immigrant. You don't need a social security number.

Like the PP said, you should try to see if you can get citizenship/insurance through your husband if possible, but if you can't or if there isn't enough time, this is definitely an option for you.

    Good luck, and congrats!
