Austin Babies

Two Questions for Austin Mom's

Ladies, my twin girls will be 6 weeks on Friday.  I would like to start taking them out for walks and out to maybe short trips to Target.

? One:  Do y'all think it is too cold to go for a walk right now?  It is 50 degrees.

? Two:  When did you have your babies out in public for the first time?

Re: Two Questions for Austin Mom's

  • my pedi told us walks were great immediately.  We were walking within 3-4 days (as soon as I felt up for it).  However, she was born a few days late and in the summer, so I don't know if you have other things to worry about with twins that might have come early/flu season/etc.

It's only 46 in north austin right now, and the windchill is 45, so I'd say that's a little cold.  I'd wait until 2-3pm if you can, when it will be warmest.

  • I think walks are great, and this weather is perfect for fresh air as long as they're bundled, ears covered, etc.  I remember reading somewhere that you should dress your babies one light layer warmer than you'd dress yourself.  So if you're comfortable, they will be too.

And I had my kiddos out pretty early--well before 6 weeks.  If you're ready to get out and about, I think your babies probably are, too.  :-)

  • I think if you bundle them up and don't stay out too long you should be fine. Just watch to see if they get cold.

  • I don't think it's too cold for walks. Bundle them up and use a blanket. My kids were born in December and January, respectively. I was taking Ben for walks as soon as I felt more comfortable to walk (c/s).

With Molly, she was out and about two days after we went home from the hospital.

Both of my kids were in public really early on.  I kept them in the Moby and no one bothered them a bit.
  • With Meredith we were out and about the day I was released from the hospital - I needed nursing bras that actually fit, and we picked up Chinese takeout. :)

Alex was born at home, so he went out for the first time at about 28 hours old - we took him to the pediatrician's office for an initial well baby check since the pedi makes hospital visits but not house calls.

  • DS was out and about pretty much immediately and every day thereafter, but he was born in July.  This one will be born in December (possibly even November, at the rate I'm going! Indifferent ), and I've wondered the same thing.  I want to get active again ASAP after he's born, and I was thinking that I could walk with him in the Moby to keep him warm.

I realize that's probably not an option with twins, but I would imagine that if you waited until mid-afternoon, bundled them up and kept a blanket over their stroller to keep any wind off their little noses and cheeks, it should be just fine.

  • We took both boys out and about pretty much right away. I don't think it's too cold to go out for walks, just bundle them up. I bet they'll love the change of scenery!

  • I think you'd be fine. Just use blankets and a hat and bundle them up. Fresh air does wonders for both you and the girls.

I just want to say CONGRATS again!

  • My son was born in February and unless it was super cold out, we started walking every day when he was less than a week old. With hats and blankets, they'd be totally fine.

We weren't really too conservative on the going out in public thing either. Obviously, we went to the pedi at about 10 days old. I remember my in-law's taking us to Steiner Ranch Steakhouse when he was 3 weeks old. He slept in his car seat the whole time. As long as people won't be touching them or coughing on them (like an airplane), I wouldn't worry.

Getting out will definitely help your sanity!! Congrats on your twins, btw. We just found out we're having twins ourselves :)

  • 1.  As long as you dress them appropriately I would definitely go for a walk!

    2.  We went out to Target at like 5 days old and went out many times and different places after that.

Do what you think you are most comfortable doing. I know twins are a lot more work than my one rather easy baby.  Good luck!
