Parenting after a Loss

Also s/o feeding- overfeeding a toddler?

Does the same premise of LO won't eat past the point of hunger still apply when they are on all real food?

So let's take Sunday night for example. I cooked up some cheese tortellini for dinner for B. She ate 22 tortellinis and kept banging her hand on the table (her sign for more...) and reaching for the bowl I had them in. She wanted more (they were gone) but wouldn't eat anything else I offered her. 22 tortellinis seems like a ton! Then we took her to our weekly neighborhood bbq and she proceeded to eat an entire grilled chicken leg, half a strip of bbq beef, and 5 tortilla chips with pico de gallo. This was right after her dinner at home. And she was crying for more, kept coming up to everyone and whimpering/fussing until they handed her another bite of chicken or some more salsa.

Should I not be letting her eat that much? (I mean really, that's way more than I eat in a meal!!) To be fair, she threw her afternoon snack on the floor and only picked at her lunch that day. But ate a good breakfast and good morning snack.

  • I let Ro eat until she stops asking for more. I don't look at her intake on a meal to meal basis, but more on a week to week basis. Yesterday she hardly ate anything at all. The day before she ate like a little piggy. It evens out.

I try just to offer her a wide variety of foods and if I know she had a ton of protein one day I'll offer more fruits and veggies the next.

  • As long as she's filling up on healthy foods I'd let her decide when she's done.

Toddlers burn so many calories between play and growing that they can pack away a lot of food.

  • Wow! Go B! I wouldn't worry.  I'm also jealous. I can't get S to eat ravioli or tortellini.  Must try those again soon. She's a growing girl-its awesome that she'll eat so much!

  • Go B!  I say it's fine since she was obviously wanting more.

  • I am so impressed with B and her eating!  I wish C would take notes from her. If I can get two pieces of chicken and some macaroni in him, I feel accomplished.  I agree though, babies burn a lot of calories and I think her refusal of snack shows she knew she was full.  Maybe she just loves her mommy's cooking!!
