Flying by plane for 2 hours

My husband and I are taking our LOs on a 2 hour plane.  Our LOs are almost 18 months. Did you purchase them each their own seat and put them in the car seat? If you did bring car seats, did you all sit together? What did you do to make them more comfortable on the plane.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I know that you're supposed to give them water to drink for their ears on take off.  I plan to bring them a movie to watch, some snacks, toys, etc. TIA!

When we flew at 13 months we bought 1 extra seat and had the other on our laps.  The one with a seat sat in a car seat. We flew again at 22 months and bought them both seats.  This time we used CARES harnesses.  How much do yours weigh?  You can start using CARES at 22 lbs.  I highly recommend them vs. lugging bulky car seats on the plane.  They are kind of pricey to buy, but you can rent them pretty cheap.  https://www.kidsflysafe.com/

As far as sitting together, the only way you could sit together is if you bought 3 seats and 1 sat on your laps.  Otherwise you would have to have a parent + child on each side of the aisle.

Thanks for the info.  One weighs 22lbs the other about 27.  We're moving to NC so we will need the car seats no matter what.  All our furniture is being driving down.  I guess one of our thoughts is ... do we purchase 1 extra seat or 2.  Will they do better in the car seat? Will one of them want to sit on our lap the entire 2 hours?  Those are some of our concerns.

I still recommend the CARES.  We used them for awhile.....we'd check the car seats with our luggage and bring the CARES for use on the plane.  Dragging 1-2 car seats through security, terminal, onto the plane, etc. is a pain in the butt

At 18 months, I'd recommend 2 seats probably.

Thanks ... I'll check it out.. my husband and I were just talking today about having to carry all that stuff thru the airport with a stroller and other things... :-x

  • Funny you should post this today. Mine are 17 month, and if you'd have asked me yesterday, I'd have said, "sure, pack some snacks and lap them both." Well, then I flew today on a 2.5 hour flight with toddler twins on my flight. Whoa. If you can find a tranquilizer dart, I'd suggest that. Indifferent

Just kidding.  (Mostly.)  If money isn't a huge issue, I'd get eveyone their own seat. If for no other reason than you won't be stressed about them crawling up on some stranger next to you.

    Good luck!

My husband was thinking of only purchasing 1 extra seat and then putting the other on our lap.. but the more I hear and read up on.. I'm thinking it would be best to get 2 seats. I definitely don't see this as a fun task and I'm truthfully dreading it.  But I can't subject them to another 15 hour car ride.  We did that this past summer with 2 days of driving and it was NOT fun!

I just did the same thing (my boys are 16 months). We just flew with both our boys on our laps for a 3.25 hour flight, and 2 1.5 hour flights on the way back.  We upgraded to business class to have more room (which thank god we did that).  We scheduled the flights around their nap times.  We did get them to sleep for a little while, but not the whole time.  DH and I were unable to sit together, but we were in close proximety.  If we have to fly again prior to age of 2, we will get at least one extra seat and bring one car seat.  It is doable, but it was hard trying to keep them on your lap.

    Good luck!

  • We flew NY to FL when the boys were 14 months old and we bought 1 extra seat and it worked out really well.  No carseats for us because we couldn't fathom having to tote yet another thing.

I was the annoying woman that walked my kid up and down the aisle..... but it entertained them since mine won't watch tv.  We also ate a ton of cheerios and puffs and made a giant mess....
