Pre pregnancy runners...

Ladies - I have a question about running for pregnant moms.  I am 21 weeks, active runner before pregnancy (completed a 1/2 marathon right before BFP).

I was able to continue with moderates jogs (3-4 miles) for first few weeks of pregnancy, but my M/S hindered me a lot.

Now, I can't run more than a mile without terrible pressure/pain in my lower abdomen/groin...to the point where it is difficult to walk afterwards if I attempt a jog.  I am doing weights and elliptical trainer with no issues, but running seems to be impossible at this point.

Anyone else have to give up running who was previously a very regular runner?

  • I've done halves in my this pregnancy and my last.  I did tris during my first.  By the 3rd trimester with #2 I was getting contractions and had to stop.  Make sure to listen to your body.  If running isn't working for you right now trying something else.  I'm very much into crossfit mom right now.  I also do spin and swim 3 days per week.  Remember to take care of you and the baby.  You will have lots of time to run once that sweet child is here.

  • Yup, I had to give it up when I was pregnant. I ran my 8th marathon just two months before my BFP, so I was running regularly when I got pregnant. However, for the first 8w, my dr. wouldn't let me run due to an ovarian cyst from my fertility drugs. Then, I got the clearance to run/walk but when I went for my 20w ultrasound, my cervix had gotten much shorter and I was put on bedrest, so I had to stop altogether.
  • Yup, this is me. I ran my first marathon 2 1/2 months before I got pregnant, and continued to run for the first 8 weeks of my first tri. I started to get terrible sciatica, so instead of running 4-5 days per week, I went down to 1-2 in hopes that by the 2nd tri, the baby would move up (or elsewhere) and the sciatica would go away. It never happened. I ran a few miles the last weekend in October, and I was still getting back/leg pain, so I decided to just focus on walking and other exercise for the rest of my pregnancy.

It's been very tough on me mentally. I loved being in great shape and having that feeling of accomplishment after long weekend runs. I loved being outside on my favorite trail. I just hope, hope, hope that the sciatica magically disappears after I have the baby. I will be one sad mama if my running days are completely behind me.

  • I've been a moderate runner (1-3 miles per workout followed by weight training, 4-5 times each week) for the last 5 years.  The beginning of my 2nd trimester was great for my mile split time (shaved 30 seconds).  Then the August humidity came and I came back to reality, lol.  At 25 weeks (Sept) I got sick (common cold/allergies) and my abs were extra sore from coughing and sneezing so I started using a maternity support belt for running.  At 34 weeks I got an ab strain from LO's movements and tendency to stay on one side so I took 7-10 days off and switched to the elliptical.  At 37 weeks I got another ab strain.  At that point (last week) I finally gave up on running and am sticking with the elliptical.  At this point, weight training, yoga, and biking (stationary or rode) haven't bothered me, so I guess I should just be happy with what I still CAN do.

  • Non-pregnant lurker. But, when I found out I was pregnant with my son I had been training for a half.  I was up to 12 miles and had been a long time runner anyways.  But, the MS kept me from continuing with running much and by maybe the 2nd tri it was way too uncomforable.  I kept up with all other workouts though.  Even high intesity spinning classes.  My body just couldn't handle running while I was carrying a baby.  I was able to get back to it about 2 months post partum.  No problems then.
