My little ones were born at 36wks, and they are 2 months old now and headed to the Dr on Wed and I wanted to ask other MoMs first.
Did you give them their shots based on their "adjusted age" or their chronological age? Seems like a dumb question, but I thought I'd ask.
Also, they were only 4 weeks early, do you think that will make a difference in reaching milestones? Like smiles? They aren't smiling yet, and was wondering when that should come.
TIA!
Re: "Adjusted Age" questions
4 weeks is considered pre-term, but not premature. Its not young enough to need to adjust age - milestones have a huge range of normal, so things will happen when they are meant to...
my older son was 4w early - and did everything average in timing. Our doc never adjusted for age- i was told in the hospital there is no need at 36w.
My doctor vaccinates according to actual age. There was a post about this recently on the preemie board and it seemed that most docs did vaccines according to actual age.
My twins were born at 34 weeks & started smiling around 10 weeks actual/4 weeks adjusted. I bet you'll get that first smile soon!
My guys were born at 34w 3 d and we have followed the actual age for immunizations. I have not really used their adjusted age at all looking for milestones. They seem to follow what is average, my pedi is always happy and says she expects them to be about a month behind for adjustment.
My girls were 10 weeks early, but their shots and wellness checks have always been based on actual age.
As for development, mine have appeared to be right on schedule for adjusted age rather than actual.
Yes same for us except 12 weeks early. I've heard that Dr.'s don't adjust age until under 36 weeks.

Ours were 35w1d, and we also do shots on the actual age schedule.
So far, they're at the lower end of the range for milestones (esp DD1), but the pedi doesn't think we need to adjust. I adjust mentally since then they hit them on time
My girls were also 36 weekers and were vaccinated on chronological age. Our pedi's did adjust their age for the first year because they were born before 38 weeks. They said any baby born (whether singleton or multiple) they adjust if born before 38 weeks in regards to development and milestones. My girls didn't first smile until about 10 weeks old, which was 6 weeks adjusted. So according to adjusted age right on track. Now of course their are 40 weeks babies that don't smile until later than six weeks and their is a big range for this and other milestones. By adjusting my girls age they really feel right on target. It just seemed like they were about 3 to 4 weeks behind in real adjust, but just right in adjusted age. This really came into play with us with eating. They couldn't eat solids like other babies their real age because they still had a strong gag reflex, but giving them an extra month and they were able to do it no problems. For example, at the 9 month appt. out pedi wanted them to be eating more table foods and they just couldn't do it yet, but by 10 months they were eating cheerios and puffs and soft veggies. They just needed that extra 4 weeks to make a difference.
Once they hit 1 year old the pedis said they were caught up and no longer needed to adjust their age.
