High-Risk Pregnancy

Hypertension questions.

So my next pregnancy will be high risk. I had a placental abruption and lost my baby at week 28. The only cause they could see was hypertension (which they neither diagnosed or treated DURING pregnancy).

Anyway, my question is this... If you HAVE been diagnosed with hypertension have you been put on bed rest? If so when? How strict is your bed rest? If you are being given medication what kind? Did you take it throughout the whole pregnancy? Do you have to take it after giving birth? If so, will it affect breastfeeding?

My husband and I are looking forward to trying again but want to be sure that we are doing everything possible to prepare for the high risk factor. I am a VERY stressed out person. High anxiety... the works. I've tried to work at controlling it. I've even gone to a counselor and have been given pills (they didn't help and I've since stopped...obviously before I got pregnant). Nothing has really helped. I get freaked out at the smallest things and I'm terrified about how it could affect my blood pressure and future pregnancies.

  • 1) I'm sorry for your loss.  I can't imagine what you and your family are going through, and have no words to offer other than my heartfelt condolences.

    2)  My BP spiked at 8w and was put on Methlydopa 250 mg twice a day.  The dosage has been increased to 250mg 4x a day.  My OB advises that I will go up to 500mg 4x a day.  I have had increased OB checks - once a week in the beginning (to regulate meds), then to twice a week, and will go back to once a week visits early (probably after my next visit on Thursday).  There will be more ultrasounds in the rest of the 2nd tri and 3rd tri, and probably an induction at 39w.  I take my BP at home and have to call if it is over 140/90 (hasn't happened yet).

    3) No bedrest yet - but it is a possibility.  However, I am encouraged to de-stress and work from home as much as possible.  My job is very, very stressful and this has been hard, but I'm getting better at it.  I am working from home two days a week - and only 40 hours a week.  My BP has been better for it.

    4) I have other risk factors of obesity and a pre-existing anxiety disorder + a stressful job + a type A personality.  This is all going to mess with my BP.  I've been identified as high risk early on in the pregnancy, and in some visits had my BP taken my the intake girl, the nurse, and the OB.
