help me out: re:sold out Leap Pads

Abby and I saw one of those leap pads in Target a month or so ago.  She decided it was what she wanted to ask Santa for this year.  As most of you know (and I just learned here this weekend) they are impossible to get now.  So, I need to convince her that she does not want it and come up with something cooler for her to ask Santa for instead. Thankfully she has not written her letter to Santa yet, I'm sure she will soon though.  So, I need to start working on her NOW. I can't handle a year of Santa disappointment if she does ask him for the Leap pad. Tongue Tied

Anyone seen something awesome out there that a 6 year old would love?  Oh and we just gave her my old Iphone(no service, so it is now an Itouch basically)- so maybe some accessory  for it.  Price range- can be up to $100.

Thanks!

I think there is another one - maybe by VTech?  It's a little cheaper and probably not quite as good but maybe better than nothing.

A may be too old for this, but I ended up getting DS the Leapster Explorer instead of the Leap Pad.  It takes game cartridges and/or downloadable apps.  The downloadable apps also work with the Leap Pad.  I was able to get the game unit with an included game cartridge, a carrying case, another game cartridge and the camera/video cartridge for the same price as the Leap Pad alone (from Amazon).  Actually I think I paid $105 total, and the Leap Pad is advertised at $99.  But I felt comfortable with it.

Based on the reviews I read of both products, I'm glad I went this route.  The Leap Pad being so new, apparently there are some glitches that need to be worked out, and since the downloadable apps are the same, I figured we'd use the Leapster for a few years and then maybe upgrade to the Leap Pad at that point.

  • My mom ran into this one year with my brother.  She told him that the elves were running behind and they were going to send his present later via UPS.  He totally bought it.  You could play it up with a really cute letter from the frazzled elf.

  • Here is what you do.  Go to zoolert.com.  Sign up to receive a text when the Leappad stocks.  When you get the text, immediately go and buy. (And I mean immediately.)  This is how I got one last week - as did the 5 other people that signed up on zoolert that I know.  They stocked on walmart, kmart and tru last week and sold out in minutes. So when you get that text, get on it.  But - it works and will get you one fast.

I've been checking that site all day!  I have not signed up for the text alerts though, will do!  Is there update instore or online inventory, or both?  Does it tell you if it is instore or online?  I saw TRU showed "in stock" this morning and I went to buy, but it would go to 0 as soon as I put it in my cart. :(

    Thanks for the tip

  • OMG, I might go mad by the end of the day!  I just got an alert- about 2 secs after signing up. Went to Amazon (where it showed up) to buy it immediately and already gone! UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maddening!!!  It really did work for me last week - and several others. Keep faith!!  I wouldn't even bother in store - just online.  I really think that will be your only luck. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!!!!!!!

Yep, me too.  FAO, Walmart, and eToys all came up on the alert.  Then gone.

And I wanted one for each kid.

I've got zoolert up.  If I can get one, I'll buy it and you can pay me for it.  :)

Leapster is different from the Leap Pad.  I think the Leap Pad grows with them quite a bit more.

I wondered about that.  I mean, I know they are different toys.  But doesn't the Leappad use the Leapster Explorer games?

I don't know anything about the available aps.  But I do think a Nintendo DS would make a better long-term option for a 6 year old.  Leapfrog products seem be aimed more at the preschool crowd.

It looks pretty geared to reading and educational Apps- and yes definitely some preK stuff.  A really likes that it has a camera and video camera and there is an App she really wants that let you write a story and put your picture (that you take with the camera) in the story.

Also, it doesn't really bother me too much if she outgrows it this year- we can hand it down to DS. :)

    Thanks Abrooks- you're awesome!
