Help drying up?

I've nursed DD just morning and evening for the last 6 or 7 weeks, but my supply has dropped enough to where we had to supplement those feedings with a (big) bottle for the last several days, so I've decided to completely stop BFing. When I quit pumping, I quit cold turkey with no problem. This time, though, I'm having some problems with engorgement. Aside from nursing to let the pressure off and cold cabbage leaves, what else can I do?

Re: Help drying up?

  • Get some Sudafed - the real stuff behind the counter with ephedrine to help dry you up.  Also - hand express just enough to relieve pressure.  It took me much longer to dry up with N than it did with A.  No idea why but I was hand expressing in an airport bathroom 3 weeks after I weaned b/c I was still so full (and I was on one feeding a day when I stopped.)  Probably way more than you wanted to know. :)  But - try the Sudafed.

  • Yep, sudafed! Or mucinex D. It works so well that I can't take it for fear of drying up even though I'm a huge mucus ball. GL, and congrats!
  • I was also told sudafed which worked like a charm.  Oh and no stimulation-- back to the shower sort of thing.  But then I never breastfed so maybe that was only a big deal since the ladies never had any action in the first place.

  • Sudafed was my saving grace. I swear it's the only reason I didn't end up with mastitis when I weaned.
