genetic testing (CVS, Amnio etc)-repost from July 2012 moms

Good morning all!

So, I am approaching 9 weeks soon and can't get the bad thoughts out of my head.

I am about to be 36 and know that there are increased risks with my age.  My greatest fear is a child with severe disabilities.  I know this may sound callous, but I know that I would probably terminate if I know the baby had downs or other neurological disorders etc.

Are any of you considering having any of the genetic tests done? I know there are risks with them all, but there seem to be fewer risks with the CVS and it can be done sooner.

I will be meeting my OB for the first time on the 7th and will discuss all this with her, but was wondering what others thoughts out there were.

  • I have the same fears as you, to be honest. I will probably be discussing having those tests done w/ my OB as well.

  • I am 37 and have the same fears. My NT scan is this Friday, so I'm going to see how that goes. When I called the schedule this scan, they told me they'd offer me the genetic counseling when I go there since I'm over 35, but we haven't decided if we're going to do it or not yet.

  • There is a screening test that you can have done between 12-14 weeks. It isn't invasive it just involves an ultrasound and some blood tests. I have a 9 year old with MR, Autism and speech impairment. To be honest with you he is an amazing child and having a special child changes your life for the better.

Anyways, I am getting the testing done due to my history only, even if there is a slight risk I would not terminate. All these tests have high rates of false positives and false negatives. I think you should talk to your doctor about the screening test before I would go for an invasive procedure like CVC.

Oh and just a little fyi, I was young, and healthy when I had my 9 year old, no family history of disabilites and my hubby was young and healthy as well. Things like this can happen to anyone at anytime in their lives. Pregnancy in and of itself is a risk...

  • I'm only 30, but I'm having the same fears. We're just going to play it by ear and see how the NT scan goes.

First, you should start with an NT scan...it is noninvasive and can give you a risk ratio that will help you decide if a more invasive test is necessary.  Second, CVS is far RISKIER than amnio - according to WTE, the risk of a loss from CVS is 1/370, and the risk from an amnio is 1/1,600.  The only reason to do a CVS is that you can do it sooner, and could choose to abort while still in the first trimester if something came back abnormal. An amnio can't be done until 15-16 weeks.

The risk of CVS and amnio are specific to each provider.

Your provider should be able to give you the statistics specific to their practice/hospital. My provider is affiliated with a major teaching hospital. The physician who performs them does many procedures per week. The CVS and Amnio risk for miscarriage is the same in their case.

    Married 4/12/08 DS born 11/17/2009 via c-section at 39 weeks. 11/12/2011 BFP #2!! m/c 7w5d. 2/28/2012 BFP #3 Beta #1-12dpo = 18; Beta #2-16dpo = 185; Beta #3-18dpo = 505. EDD 11/10/2012. Ectopic discovered at 5w4d. D&C followed by methotrexate.
  • Your OB will give you your options and all the necessary statistics. I am almost 39, had my first at 37, so I know what you mean. Just keep in mind that the odds are still overwhelmingly in your favor to have a normal, healthy child!

  • I had the same fears.  In fact, I just had an amnio over the weekend.  Although the noninvasive tests all came back negative, due to my age (35), I wanted to be sure.  I was going to have the CVS but when I spoke the the hospital that would be doing the procedure, the rates for miscarriage were lower for the amnio.  The only downside to having an amnio is that you have to wait longer, it has been VERY HARD hiding this pregnancy b/c I am showing, but I do not plan on coming out until after I get the results.  I would ask your  OBGYN what they recommend and then contact the hospital/person who they recommend you to, to perform the procedure and see what the rate of miscarriage is for both CVS and amnio.

  • I'm 35 now, will be 36 when the baby comes.  I'm planning to get the amnio, not to abort if the child has a disability, but to better prepare for it.  A friend of mine was complete surprised by a Down's syndrome baby.  She wished she had known sooner so that she could sort of grieve for the life she won't have, and begin looking into things like special needs daycare and school.
