He haz it. It makes me so very, very sad to hear him cough. And how stupid that his first illness comes after he's been OUT of daycare for more than a week. I need him to go back to school so that he can stay healthy, I guess.
Pedi said it would get worse tonight before it gets better. Any croup-experienced moms who can tell me what to expect, what tricks you had up your sleeve to help, etc?
Re: Croup
so sorry to hear this, and hope he is feeling better soon. We have gone through it a few times in our house with my DD.
What has helped: running humidifier in her room, taking her into a steamy bathroom (run the shower on super hot and let the steam build up). Also, the cold air at night (now that we actually have it) is supposed to be good for them too (we never had that option as she's always had it when it's been warm outside).
Did the doc give you a steroid for him? Almost as soon as she would take that - it would start sounding much better as it reduced the imflammation in her airways. She never had it as an infant though, just a toddler, so maybe that is not an option?
M had croup last week. We were driving home from New Orleans and had to go to an ER. She was wheezing. It was the worst! But ditto all of the above. M got an oral steroid, and the bark went away almost immediately and never came back. She's still a little snotty, but back to her smiley, happy self.
A swift recovery to him!
steamy showers or cold air outside when it hits tonight.
we've used a homeopathic called spongia tosta with a lot of success. worked like a charm and would allow him to sleep through the night. if memory serves, Mar had luck with this remedy as well.

Boo!! DD has had it twice, one at 4 months and again as a young toddler. The infant version was MUCH worse! Her croup led to an ear infection. Double Boo. I will second the humidifier and steamy shower. The PP mentioned taking him outside in the cool air, which was also something our pedi mentioned, but she had it in August, so that wasn't an option. The alternative to that is to open the freezer door and stand with him as close to "in" it as you can. The cool air does help. It definitely will get worse before it gets better. I would prepare for probably at least 2 long nights, maybe 3. But then it does get better, so just prepare for that and you can get through it. Also, croup is highly contagious so definitely watch A around him.
Good luck! I know how bad it sucks!
These 2 things really helped DD when she had it. Poor baby! I hope he feels better soon.
When J had it the best thing when he had an attack (that horrible sound while they're sleeping) that woke him was to either take him out in the cold night air (dry and cold, just like it is right now!) or a hot steamy bathroom. We would actually rotate. We would bundle him up really good and take him outside for about 5minutes or so- it really helped a lot. It reduces the inflammation.
Hope he is better soon!
Sorry, I didn't even think about his age. Maybe just something warm to help soothe his throat?
Sparky had it week before last and we were in the Dell ER twice in one day. The second time he was in full on respiratory distress and they gave him steroids. He is just now, 2 weeks after onset, getting less snotty. We kept a cool mist vaporizer in his vicinity at all times and just turned it off last night because it was making his room pretty frigid and he wouldn't sleep.
Besides the steroid dose he got on the night of the 15th, we haven't done any other meds. Just twice daily saline and snot sucker. Its hard when you can see he's having trouble though. I wish I could teach him to cough and spit (without puking of course).
