Morning nap is the longest-that "normal?"

I always thought the morning nap was a shorter one and the afternoon was a long one.  But lately LO takes about a 2 hour morning nap starting around 9 or 9:30am and then the afternoon nap is often 30 -45 minutes.  Will that eventually turn into one long nap?  Or should i somehow be encouraging a longer afternoon one?  I've tried waking him a few times after an hour in the morning but the length of the second one always seems to stay the same.

Re: Morning nap is the longest-that "normal?"

  • My DD does the same thing, long morning nap and then 2-3 30minute naps in the afternoon.  I remember reading somewhere (Weissenbluth (sp?) sleep book) that the morning nap is kind of a continuation of that night's sleep so it is a higher quality nap, but I don't know if that's true... In that same book it said babies should only be awake 2-3 hours before you put them down again, this works for us if we catch DD before she gets overtired, and she will only nap in the swing.

  • DD's first nap is usually her longest, but it's not set in stone.
  • It's the shortest in this house, but she's also down to 2 naps a day.  That might have something to do with it.
