FBR: Talk to me about invisible fences

I hope this post doesn't get controversial.  I have always been against invisible fences but I really am at a point where I don't know what else to do and I'm looking for thoughts, recommendations, experiences, etc.  We have a wrought iron fence on the back portion of our fence. The house backs to a greenbelt and we have to have the wrought iron.  The wrought iron is horrible for the dogs.  They are constantly watching other dogs on walks with their families and there are several people that walk there dogs off leash (which I hate) and the dogs will come up to the fence and it really upsets my dogs.  Since I've been in the house I've put up a bamboo type fence thing along the wrought iron, chicken wire, a shorter fence about 4 feet before the wrought iron, dog training/behavioralist... I've tried everything to keep my dogs away from the wrought iron but nothing is working.  Finley is strong and has charged so hard at the fence that she has actually popped off one of the bars got stuck in the fence (several times) but has never gotten through.  Well, this weekend there was a dog on a walk with its family, Finley charged the fence and broke all the way through and had a run in with the dog on the walk.  We don't know what else to do but to put up an invisible fence about 4 or 5 feet before the wrought iron to keep Finley away from the fence.  I'm terrified that she will get out again and hurt another dog or get hurt herself.  BTW, she is by no means a vicious or mean dog and has never hurt a person but she is not great with other dogs.

So, talk to me about invisible fences.  Have you ever had one?  If so, what exactly does it do?  Does it work?  Does it hurt the dogs or just scare them?  Do you have any alternative ideas that we could try?  Thanks!

  • I don't have experience with the invisible fences but I did a training session with the Si t Me ans S it guys.  They use an electric shock collar.  I tested it on my hand and it didn't hurt at all, it only buzzed like one of those prank handshake things.

If the invisible fences use the same concept, then I think it could be helpful and not mean at all.

  • I don't have personal experience with this but only remember a story told to me by my friend who uses it. She has two boxers that are totally wild & out of control. They put up an invisible fence in their front yard to try to keep the dogs in (I guess).  Well, they saw something, maybe a squirrel or another dog, and they charged it.  She said she could see that they got a shock as they ran through the barrier, but once they were through there was nothing to keep them from running on.  If your dog is running at the fence, it may not be much of a deterrent.

My neighbor has two escape artist dogs.  He's tried the invisible fence twice, and both times, one of the dogs has chewed through the wires (I guess the wires that make the border).

Again, these are just second-hand stories so I'm not really sure how helpful they are.
