Babies: 3 - 6 Months

XP - Anyone with experience with baby skull issues?

Our daughter is 10 weeks old.  Her head was very elongated when she was born, despite not being breech past 24 weeks, and arriving via scheduled c/s.  To us, her head seems to have smoothed out considerably, and is less long than it was.  However, we went for her two month check up and the pedi is concerned not so much about the circumference, but by feel.  She is concerned that a couple of sutures that should not have closed yet, closed.  We have an appt with a neurosurgeon on Dec 7., in the closest city to us.

The pedi says that if this is the case, it would be a cosmetic issue, but would require surgery.  Dr. Google is freaking me the eff out.  I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Thanks in advance.

  • I hope all will go well...I don't personally have experience but I wonder if it is something the baby helmets can help with. Good luck!

  • I had the same issue with DS at his 4 mo appointment.  But we were sent for skull x-rays first to see if that was really the case.  Thankfully, everything turned out okay, but I'm wondering did you have x-rays done first?

No, they're going to do them when we meet with the neurosugeon. Did your son require any treatment at all or was everything totally fine?  I am really hoping we either don't have a problem here, or it is one that doesn't require surgery.  Thanks for posting!

  • We were told at a 1 week old weight check that his head was elongated and we needed to have x-rays done on his skull to make sure that the sutures had not fused yet. He had an x-ray and it showed that they had not. If they did, she said he would need surgery when he was 1 year old. I hope that this is an unnecessary scare for you and that it all turns out well.

  • We had the same experience with my daughter (now 2). They sent us to a cranial specialist who did xrays and told us it was fine and she would grow into it. It really freaked me out when I googled as well. Hang in there, hopefully everything is fine:) GL.

  • Yes, she might have a form of craniosynosis.  My daughter had metopic.  I'm thinking your daughter might have sagital cranio.  Go onto Cranio Kids website.  It's very helpful and I'm glad your doctor is refering you to a specialist.  If you have anymore questions, let me know.  My daughter did need to have surgery.
