DS has had a cold for almost a month now (this rotten cold has been going around here). We've tried to nurse it but the ped decided to put him on amoxicillin to try to nip it (his fourth dose will be this morning and I don't notice a change yet...) DD ended up catching it, she started showing symptoms on Friday.
Would you try to nurse her cold as well, let it run its course-or call the ped for amoxicillin for her too? I hate running to medicine but she's had so much mucous that she's spit up quite a bit during last night and this morning's feedings (not enough to worry, but more than usual-and she's spitting up her Zantac!)
We're doing all the at-home things-her mattress is elevated, she's napping in her swing, baby vicks on her feet at night, humidifier in their room, saline drops and attempting to suck out junk, etc...
Re: Babies are sick, WWYD?
I've never heard of amoxicillin for a cold but if your LO has an actual infection, antibiotics will help.
I would call your pedi just because of the amount of mucus so that he/she can rule out some type of infection.
I'm sorry your kids are sick
Cold = viral. Amoxicillin = bacterial.
Amox will not help treat the source or the symptoms of a viral infection. If it's truly viral, you have to let it run it's course.
Although now that you've started the amox for DS, you have to finish the doses. Don't quit the amox until it's finished.
I think they gave it to him on the off chance that it's bacterial-since its not getting any better.
What a lame month. It's bounced around to us all (me twice) except for DH!
