Pregnancy after c-section risks?

Im about to go to my 6 week visit and discuss BC. I was wondering what the risks are if you get pregnant less than a year after you had a c-section???

Re: Pregnancy after c-section risks?

  • definatly a question best answered by your Dr. My understanding is that it is best to wait 2 years before TTC or PG after a CS.

  • uterine rupture at the incision line from lack of sufficiant healing time.  Though, this still remains a risk even after the recommended year waiting period between csec births.  the chance of having placenta previa are also increased with a second pregnancy after a c/section.

hopefully you have a safe pregnancy and delivery.   pregnancy is hard on the body and thats why it is important to let your body heal and recover between births.  with that being said,  the majority of women with close together pregnancies do just fine.

  • I have 2 friends that had c/s and got pregnant when their LO's were less than 1 year old.

I too have heard that if you have a c/s, you should wait a year to make sure the incision is completely healed internally.

My doctor said to wait a MINIMUM of 6 months before getting pregnant again.

  • It all depends on what your dr says. Mine says to wait 6 months. We waited 4 (after getting the okay from my dr) and everything was fine.

  • I got pregnant with DS when DD was six months old; and had them fifteen months apart. Everything went fine and my Dr didn't seem concerned at all. He did however, tell me I would need a repeat c/s since that is their office's protocol for previous c/s births less than 22 months apart.

  • I had a c-section in June 2010 and another one last September.  There were no specific risks, but I couldn't try for a VBAC.  My second c-section was scheduled.  I had no problem during my pregnancy, but I'm sure it wasn't an ideal situation even if my doctors didn't think it was a big deal.

  • There are risks of back to back pregnancies, regardless of delivery method. Ask about that if you are concerned.

The main risk of pregnancy very soon after a c/s is uterine rupture. The research shows that at least 18-24 months between deliveries decreases that risk. You may not find a provider who will attend a VBAC at a shorter interval, if that's what you want. If you want a RCS your provider might be less concerned.
