babies who sttn

When your baby did it, did they continue to do it or was it a fluke?

Re: babies who sttn

  • Last week DD slept 7-7 two nights in a row. Then the next few nights she woke up at 3 or 4. So long as I'm only getting up once a night, I see that as a success. It still blows my  mind that sleeping 4-6 hours at a time is considered "through the night" at this point.

I have heard that sometimes it's gradual and other times it's a sudden shift. It's different for every baby though.

  • For us it was gradual.  He used to have a 2-3am and a 5:30-6am feeding.  Then he dropped the 2-3am one....  there was about a week where he took that feeding every other night, then it went away completely.  Now he is in the process of dropping the 5:30am feeding... same process where sometimes he wakes for it, sometimes he doesn't.  We had three days of completely STTN, but the last two nights, he's been up at 6am again.  It's still a great stretch (8hrs+) but I will be thrilled when he STTN completely.

  • DD went from waking up at least twice a night every night to STTN all at once at 8 weeks. DS has done it twice, once at six weeks and then last night. FWIW, I consider STTN at least 6 hrs. DD went straight to 8, DS has done 7. DD didn't do 12 hour stretches until closer to 12 weeks but she was also on formula. I wouldn't expect DS to do 12 hours while BFing.

  • We've had 3 nights in the last week where she slept 6-8 hour stretches starting at around 11pm. Only problem is she won't do it in her crib. She pretty much only sleeps in her swing (flame away I know that's not the best place for her). We're working on getting her to sleep flat more (naps in the pnp, her crib, etc) but when she's screaming at 11-12-1 at night and the only way she falls asleep is in her swing I'll take it. We have a video monitor on her at all times & she is always strapped in.

Anyone with success switching from swing/rnp sleepers to flat sleepers?

  • First time she STTN was when she was about 5 days old. We got about 7 hours from her. The next night we got 8, and it just kept increasing. She's 2 months old now, and we are getting 11 hours out of her a night religiously. I think I got really lucky though. If I ever have another child, I'm in for a rude awakening! lol.

  • She slept from 11-8 last night. Not just 6 hours or 8-2am. I was pretty happy with one wakening and a quick eat. Lately, she was sleeping pretty poorly - I felt like she was a newborn again.

It has given me hope for the future. She ate every two hours last night in the evening.

  • I asked the same thing the next day after DD STTN the first time!  For us, it has lasted. Two weeks now, going strong.  7:30pm - 7am, bottle and back down till 10-11am.

  • DD did a couple fluke times in the first month or 2. At 9 weeks she started sleeping about 8 hours consistently, since about 12 weeks she's been sleeping 11-12 hours.

  • Our son is 11 weeks and for the past couple of weeks he has slept 7 hours straight without waking  up, 2 times it was 8 or 9 hours.  He had gone that long several times before, with a couple of nights in between of 5-6 hours.

So by a fluke, a couple of times we would put the paci in while we made the bottle and he went back to sleep for another 3-5 hours by the time we went back in to get him up.  So now, when he wakes up in the night, we go in and watch him for a couple of minutes to see if he will settle himself (and he has a couple of times).  If he doesn't, we put the paci in and he has consistently been going back to sleep until 6 or 7am.  We know he can easily do a 7 or 8 hour stretch without a feeding, so we're making sure he eats enough during the day and now only feeding him after 7-8 hours in the night.

I'd say for the last two weeks he has made it 10-11 hours without a feeding but we have had to put the paci in one time during the night.  Much better than him getting up to eat and having to put him back down again, which was taking about 45 mins(not even  that bad).

At naps he is good at going back to sleep if we leave him alone to fuss it out for a few minutes without putting in the paci. So we are thinking we are going to let him fuss a few more minutes if he wakes up in the night starting in another two weeks.  We have been afraid to let him fully wake himself in the middle of the night so far and then have trouble going back to sleep.  He may just stop waking up on his own, we'll see.
