3rd Trimester

When did you notice hiccups?

I just hit 31 weeks on Friday and I think we had our first bought of noticeable fetal hiccups on Friday night for about 15 min or so. Then I felt it again Saturday morning for about 5 min. Then again this morning for about 10 min. LO's movements have been totally normal otherwise.

I have been reading a little about it on the internet (dangerous, I know) and some websites say that it has been linked to cord compression, so I called my OB and the on-call doc told me that it sounds like hiccups but to go to the ER and get hooked up to the monitors just to check it out. Kind of sounds like a case of covering his own butt, so I'm not rushing off to the ER. I decided that if she has the jerky movements frequently for extended periods of time, or if I notice that she is moving around a lot less than usual, then I will go to the hospital or try to get in with my doctor tomorrow. Buuuuuut, I am wondering: When did you start to notice hiccups? Does 31 weeks sounds about right? How long would the hiccups last (5, 10, 20 minutes?)? Have you heard of fetal hiccups without any other signs (decreased movement) being an issue?

THANK YOU!!

Re: When did you notice hiccups?

  • LO has had hiccups since about 26 weeks or so. She gets them every night around 8pm and also in the morning around 10am. I feel bad for her because they seem to last for at least 20 minutes! I hate getting the hiccups, so I hope she doesn't mind them too much! :)

  • I started to feel them around 28 weeks. LO gets them AT LEAST 3 times a day, every day.... never had any issues. They have lasted anywhere from 10 minutes to almost 1/2 an hour. I am sure you are fine.

  • I noticed them around week 32ish. Now babe gets them 3-4 times a day, ladting about 10-30 min, and my doc seems to think that's great as that means the lungs are well developed?

  • When I was pg with DS I noticed them pretty early on and he had them throughout the pregnancy.  Sometimes they would last for 5-10 minutes.  I think this baby just started having them, but they are very brief periods, so brief that I'm not even sure if they are hiccups or rapid, repetitive movements.  Hiccups are extremely common and they don't bother the baby like they do us (or so I read in WTEWYE).  I'm sure everything is fine.

  • Thanks for the responses. I haven't noticed any more hiccups today, and she has been crazy active so there are no signs of distress or anything. Unless anything weird happens, I just plan to bring it up with my OB at my next appt on Thursday.
    Thanks again.
  • I actually never noticed them, but when we went in for my o.b appointment last time (34 weeks), she laughed when checking the heartbeat and said he had the hiccups.  Then I realized that I had felt them a lot, just never thought anything of it.

    She wasn't concerned at all.

  • Baby just got the hiccups for the first time last week (around 31 weeks). Mine are fun because I have the one spot where I feel the baby bump with the hiccups primarily, and then there's the spot where baby kicks and punches as they're hiccuping, so it's like my whole uterus is one big punching bag. Quite amusing.
